I have bought an old 20N, for the sake of having what I consider the ideal shape and size, and an ingenious design with its prism finder..

So I am happy finaly getting something like this in my hands, having bought both a Sigma SD 10 and Nikon D50....this is by far the best design, unfortunetely Olympus discontinued this model as far back as 2001 I believe.

Now then, there must be a lot of happy users of this model.
?: How come my flash photos come out with a brown tint to them?
They practically look old.

I have tried orf and tiff and jpeg, they all come out the same way.
With white ballance in auto or in 5500k, the 5500k was slightly better.
The ORF was uncorrectable with a dominant green tint to it.

Any idears?

Yes...definetely brown...

It doesn't look brown on my monitor either. Looks almost perfect. I guess this is why so many stress monitor calibration . . . but also why it mean a lick of difference unless eveyone's monitor is calibrated the same.

Best of luck.

I'm still an E-20 user have been for awhile. I haven't upgraded mostly because of the phenomenal lens and cheap accessories. I took a look at your pic and agree that the colors are Good. The whites of the dress are nice and clean and the darks of the pupils are nice and black. However, the background is predominantly brown giving an overall impression of brown. However, this is no fault of the equipment, more the composition, and perhaps monitor.

I can see the slight off white you are referring to though not bad and easily corrected. Almost surely a white balance issue. Set your white balance manually with a white card and try that to see if it makes a difference. Also, if you shoot in raw you can balance in post processing.

Jesper,

I put that image into PSE5 and reduced the amount of red in the shot and now it looks much better, at least to my eye.

The brown you are referring to is normal. To me it is a bit more reddish. The white balance on the E-20 is warmer compared to Canon, Fuji, etc. My E-20 (sold), C-725, C740, and E-300 (a bit cooler) all have the same type of look. I kinda of like it or maybe I got use to it.

On my E-20, I find the color to be a bit pale. I set the in camera contrast to high. This does offer clipping of highlight at times, but also more saturation for color. You can also post process after the photo if you do not want to do this in camera. In camera was sufficient for my needs (family photos). Color is a personal preference, so do what is best for you.

In looking at your photo, it looks normal on my monitor. The red/brown cast you see if from the indoor lighting (incandescent).

Why that is as good as anyone could ask for. Thanks!

I have been using CS II and Heliconfilter, but I wasn´t able to get that color right.

Any tricks or forehand knowledge, that you would care to share ?

I was thinking that the camera did it´s best in tiff, the orf-files all come out green...

Any presets that work well? Auto white Ballance is too shaky I think.

Any dedicated site for these questions?

on my Mac flat screen. The warmth gives a healthier look to the skin and hair, IMO.

I know what you mean by the brownish cast, as I have seen this before from my E-1 at times... sort of like a thin layer of brown smoke has been laid over the whole photo.

Jesper: have you tried a colour correct by sampling off the white blouse?

I had the E-10 but want to add a 20 to my collection, as it is a little faster in some aspects (shot review) than the E-10 — and I like the quiteness of the E-XX shutter, fast flash synch and a few other goodies. You should get a lot of good use out of it.

Thought about picking up a used E 20 and was curious about a couple of things.

-is the E-20 weather sealed at all?

-Why is it a E-20p in Phil's review, but now referred to as a E-20n? Are there different versions?

-can I use my fl-36 with the E-20?

-can I use my 4gig extreme III card with it?

I'm not sure about "at all", but certainly no weather sealing at the E-1 level--not that I've ever heard about anyway.

Aside from the "video out" difference, they are identical. The "p" is the euro (PAL) version, while the "n" is US/Japan (NTSC).
-can I use my fl-36 with the E-20?
Sure, just not in TTL mode.
-can I use my 4gig extreme III card with it?
Don't know for sure but do seem to recall hearing that only up to 2 Gb was possible. But surely not an important point, is it?

I can't answer them all, but I'll try some...

I would say no. Treat it kindly in the rainy weather, like covering it with plastic. Dust on the sensor is not a problem, however, as the lens is not removable. Dust cannot get in there.

E-20n? Are there different versions?
I believe the N is for NTSC (North America)and P is for PAL (Europe) — as there is a video out port for shot review on TV. Newer cameras often have a menu choice for the different TV modes.
-can I use my fl-36 with the E-20?
Yes. I've used the FL-50 on the E-10 and it's fine. It also allows you to use the flip-flash as fill light and the add-on flash as a bounce. 'Quite rare among DSLRs. E-10, E-20, (and E-300 and 330 with FL-36 only, I believe) are the cameras I know of that can do this. Other manufacturers (and the E-500) generally have the flip-flash banging into the add-on flash, killing the two-flash option.
-can I use my 4gig extreme III card with it?
I'm pretty sure that 2 megs is the E-xx's upper limit. High speed cards don't help the speed of the E-XXs. They have their clock speed and they're sticking to it.

Jesper,

I'm sure that CS2 has the same controls that I used, probably just named a little differently.

You could try using levels and then just play with the red channel.

Or, you could just try playing with the red channel settings directly. I don't used CS2 much but it would be worth a shot.

Can you do a custom white balance with the 20n?

Browned off??

Came to me in a flash.

NO

CAN´T SAY ABOUT VERSIONS, i BELIEVE IT IS DIFFERENT MARKED MODELS E.G. P = EUROPE (ETC.)
-can I use my fl-36 with the E-20?
YES BOTH FL 36 AND FL 50
-can I use my 4gig extreme III card with it?
YES

I use ACR and CS2, it's quite easy to adjust the color balance and if you feel that the camera has a tendency towards one shade or another, you can set a custom 'default' so that all of your images are automatically corrected the same way when opened in ACR.
