Which budget DSLR?

My department purchased the first Rebel DSLR when it came out. I tried to take some pictures of students in a hallway and could hardly see through the viewfinder. Took it home one weekend to try with my telephoto lenses out side. Again coud not see very well. The 20D (and I assume the 30D) viewfinder is much better and almost as good as film SLR viewfinders. Compare them for your self in a store. By the way the Rebel is sitting in a desk draw and nobody useses it.

Forgive me if this has been asked/discussed a few times before. If
so can somebody point me at the right thread(s) to read.

Basically I am thinking about buying a budget DSLR. I currently own
a Sony H5. Below are some examples of what I have achieved on it so
far, but many times I have missed the shot because of it's
limitations.

I am considering the following three cameras as a replacement:

Nikon D80
Canon EOS 400D
Sony Alpha A100

For my style of shooting I need something that is fast and will
shoot in low light conditions (often internally). I do not like to
use a flash and prefer to shoot my subjects from a distance with a
high shutter speed taking multiple shots in quick succession. I
prefer to compose shots with a zoom (rather than moving
physically) and therefore I will need a decent zoom lens for
whatever camera I choose. As such good image stabilisation is a
must. Having owned a H5 I also appreciate a large LCD screen since
I rarely use the eyepiece. I am generally careful with my cameras
and they do not incur a lot of wear and tear. I also have
relatively small hands so a big grip is not essential.

My budget is about £1000 (US$2000, but remember you get a lot more
for your money in the States than you do in the UK). Out of this I
will need to buy a standard lens and a zoom lens with about x10
capability (not sure what that relates to in mm's, 200?)

With this all in mind can anyone suggest which camera and lens'
would best suit me? It does not have to be one of the above.

Thanks in advance.
--I really love the shot with the people walking along the old road, its the type of shot you strive for, & it looks like it was painted. all of the cameras you have listed would make good choices. I would like to suggest that you look at the Pentax K100D, & its very wide range of lens.

Most digital cameras have a "country of purchase" warranty only. This is an issue when buying a camera offshore. Lenses, however, I think can have international warranties. I am thinking of buying my first DSLR in the near future at home in New Zealand but will then buy a good lens when I visit Singapore in a couple of months. Prices are there are much cheaper than the UK or NZ.

Then it will be surprise for you... With DSLR you won't be able to
take pictures looking at LCD. the only way to do that -- look
through viewfinder.
You could consider the Olympus E-330 if you want a "Live View" SLR camera which allows you to use the LCD to compose shots. It's a good camera and the Olympus lenses are excellent
