Hello, I've done a search and haven't been able to find any answers.

A friends E-500 has developed a couple of problems. The review pictures on the LCD are varying in size on playback, even though the camera settings did not change when the pictures were taken. They sometimes only show in the centre of the LCD. :-(

The other problem is that the while the pictures are being reviewed, sometimes the the dust screen flashes up, and other times the camera freezes altogether.

I think the problems may be related, but has anyone encountered any problems like these before?

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know how much Olympus charge for servicing in the UK?

Thanks for any help.

I don't think it is POSSIBLE to have problems EXACTLY like that, and I think somewhere along the line there is a confusion.

However FWIW if the SSWF light is going on unprompted then the camera is restarting, which is undoubtedly a fault.

Just in case, use a different card, take the battery out for 24 hours, and do a factory reset (which I would expect the 24 hours to do anyway, but just in case).

Has your friend perhaps been editing pictures straight on the memory card? Could he have resized some images and saved them back to the card? Or is this an issue that occurs with pictures that have JUST been taken and are immediately being reviewed?

reviewed, sometimes the the dust screen flashes up, and other times

Does your friend have an alternate battery pack that he could try? If this was a laptop computer (something the workings of which I am more familiar with), then I would say that an apparent mid-operation reset was due to a dying or damaged battery.
I think the problems may be related, but has anyone encountered any
problems like these before?

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but are these shots taken in portrait orientation (camera rotated 90 degrees) which would show the entire picture in the "center"? I'm not sure I understand what is happening.
The other problem is that the while the pictures are being
reviewed, sometimes the the dust screen flashes up, and other times
the camera freezes altogether.
The "dust screen" means the SSWF function is activating? The freezing problem sounds like a real issue.

Don't worry, nothing serious. I had the same problem and the reason was that the CF was damaged so the camera could read only the thumbnail image, bot the whole file.

I had similar issue with a bad CF card. Replaced the card and it fixed the problem. The card I had was a counterfit card I bought on eBay. I got a refund and went out and bought from a local dealer.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the helpful replies. :-)

The pictures were re-sizing as soon as they were taken, with no setting changed, and no editing to the images.

I don't know what card she was using, but hopefully it will be a CF card, and that will be the problem.

I shall get in touch with my friend and advise her to try changing the CF card, if that is what she is using, and maybe also try a reset.

Thanks, I'll let you know how it goes.
