Your Gonna Hate This!!!!!

Fred, you have a very sour attitude. Lighten up.
I've been into computers for over 20 years now. I'm a web designer since the very begining of the internet so I've been around my share of newsgroups and forums. I can spot a troll a mile away.

I don't care if someone bought a Sony over a Nikon. I don't go to the Sony forums and post anything about how Nikon is better than the Sony because it would be no help to the Sony forum. Some people like to post flame bait. It's been that way since the very begining.

You have to ask yourself what he was trying to accomplish with his post. Did he give you any links or advice that helped? Did he send you to his gallery to see how much better the Sony is? I'm telling you it's flame bait, plain as day. He basically said my camera is better than yours. That's not what this forum should be wasted on.

Also, He said he made his decision based on Phil's report. Yet Phil's report does not show a single face! Not one portrait! I don't know about you but I shoot a great deal of people. I think that portraits are very important and the fact that it was left out is just plain stupid. Go look at your photos. See any people? Think about it for a second.

I don't think Phil's review was good because he focused on just a small sample of images and didn't even show any humans except for a hand. This is unexceptalble! I'm sorry if you don't agree and that's ok. I hate to see people miss out on a great camera based on a long winded review that shows all the knobs and switches but doesn't show what the camera can really do.
Fred

Here, here Colin. I also skiped the 995 and will do the same with the 5000. I am sure that Nikon's next offering will be that much better. Hopefully a sub 2000 DSLR like rummored.
David Ramsay.

ps. Oregon is a photographers dream if it where not for the rain.
There is certainly a lot of high emotion running through these posts.

I owned a 950 for just over a year and found it to be a fntastic
camera. I have been an amateur photographer for over 20 years, with
an SLR and lenses and the results from the 950 were equally as good.

I then sold the 950 and upgraded to a 990. Even better. More
resolution. Better dynamic rage. Just great, great pictures. I
didn't upgrade to a 995 because I didn't see it as a big enough
improvement, and it's actually worse in some areas, such as
durability, batteries and white balance.

So now, along comes the 5000. Do I upgrade? 5MP sounds good. I was
fortunate enough to have a good friend who had already bought one
and I spent a day looking closely at it. My (personal) conclusions
are:

1) It is too small and fiddly for my liking.
2) You still get red-eye, although not as bad as on the 990.
3) The perceived resolution increase is very small.
4) There is more saturation which I don't like, although it can be
adjusted.
5) The flip out screen looks very vulnerable The swivel design will
take some beating - Try getting your finger over the shutter button
with the 5000 down by your knees or up over your head.
6) I expected to see a much better lens - 4 or 5 x zoom.

So I then looked at the Sony 707 in my local store.

1) The lens is much more what I would expect. Fast 5 x optical zoom.
2) The results are noticeably sharper than the 5000.
3) The operation is very smooth - zooming in and out feels just
beautiful.

But...

1) There is nowhere near as much control of things like sharpening
etc as the Nikon has.
2) It doesn't use compact flash - Sony have shot really themselves
in the foot with this one.
3) I am not keen on the Sony colours.

So I will keep my trusty, if dated, 990 until Nikon get their act
together and produce something worth moving up to. And I am sure we
will not have to wait too long.

Colin.

And that's the truth. (Laugh in)

Now, now. Sane talk like that can get you flamed around here.

The only odd thing about Ray's post is that he had no history on
this place under his current name. That might make him seem to be a
troll in some people's eyes, but they may have to be clouded by
reactionary feelings of misgiving to jump to that conclusion. The
words he wrote express a process of decision by logic, then
recommendation, then experience.

The Sony 707 is worth it. It is so worth it, that it gets an eBook
all its own.

The fact that it is worth it does not detract from the Nikon 5000.
Both cameras are worth their salt. They are very different beasts
from very different design departments.

Let's put it this way: If Nikon had brought out two cameras in
December, one being a black-body version of the 707, people around
here would be going nuts over it shouting to the rafters about the
big zoom and night features.

If Sony had brought out a compact 5-megger just before Christmas,
that being a silver CP5K, people over there would be going nuts
over it shouting to the rafters about all the great image control
it had.

Ray,

My WHAT is going to hate this? You said your_ going to hate this. Perhaps my mind is going to hate it? My ego is going to hate it? What on me is going to hate it? I don't understand. It would have made sense standing alone if it had said, perhaps, "You're gonna hate this", but there was ownership implied by the use of "your", so I wanted to ask for clarification.

I don't have a 'gonna hate this' whatever that is.
unless you meant YOU'RE....which in that case, nope still don't care.
I have something to own up to. I am a fanatical Nikon enthusiast,
having had the 950, upgraded it to the 990, and was anxiously
awaiting the 5000. When I read Phil's report on the 5000, it made
me re-think, and I started to review the Sony F707. Anyway to cut
a long story short, I bought it a few days ago, and all I can say
is Wow. It is brilliant, easy to use, focus is pin sharp in low
light conditions thanks to the infra-red matrix, and the quality of
the images are truly outstanding. I never thought I would say
this, but I am now ready to ditch the 990. I had the idea I would
run the two side by side, but after seeing the quality of the
images of the F707, I cannot see a use for the Nikon.
Don't get me wrong, I love Nikon, and I am now saddled with loads
of Compact Flash Cards, an Iomega CF Portable Clik Drive, etc. etc.
not to mention additional lenses and Flash, I was more than keen to
keen buying Nikon, but they need to seriously upgrade their digital
pro-sumer cameras before I will consider buying again.
I am ducking, I said you wouldn't like it!!

Thanks for showing YOUR knowledge of the English language :) Seriously... there was no need to correct him. Forum posting always tend to have sloppy spelling and grammar. Obviously, this is not an ideal situation, but I don't think you are going to change it single-handedly in this manner. Just like when teachers say no to a student who asks "Can I go to the bathroom?" instead of "May..."

Nice shots, Fred. Smith Rock is a great place. I'm just west of you
in Salem.
I went to McNary High School class of '80. I also used to go Gervis
High (in between Salem and Hubbard). Have you ever heard of them? I
like the valley but it sure rain a lot on that side of the
mountains compared to Eastern Oregon. This is a photographer's
dream living here.
Fred
Don't tell anyone, Fred, but I'm a SoCal transplant. Been here 15 years. My 13 year old daughter is a "native" however. I know both of your High Schools, but I'm in the Sprague/ South area of Salem (Fairmont Hill). Yes we get lots of rain and plenty of it. Mostly drives me nuts this time of year, but the beautiful spring/summer/fall seasons make up for it. Still I love the Ponderosa forests near Black Butte and Sisters, and places like Lake Paulina. Your right about it being a photographers paradise. And Bachelor is a skiiers heaven (Ssshhh). I want to go down to the Steens in the Malheur region this summer. Still lots of places to see.--FJBrad

Being someone whose newest camera is an slr purchased more than 20 years ago, I probably qualify as an antique on this site. I stumbled onto DPReview a few months ago while searching the web for information about digital cameras, before making my 1st digital camera purchase. DPReview has been one of the finest sites that I have had the good fortune to find. By dropping in on several fora on this site, I have gained quite an education in the genre. Here I have found masses of fine people, who are obviously passionate about their photgraphy and eager to share their knowledge and insight. A large number of them are here in the Nikon forum.

However, this forum has, at times, become quite distasteful to follow. Reading threads such as this one, are like listening to my two elementary age daughters arguing some nonsensical triviality. I feel somewhat embarrased writing this message, as I don't want to join in with the negativity.

Do the snipers among you actually enjoy this type of discourse? As an outsider, let me say that it is painful to follow.

I'm sure that you would all much more enjoy discussing the joys of photography. Can't this forum get back to that!?

LOL, I have to agree!!
Why would anyone hate it if you buy a Sony.
The Sony is a good camera.
The Nikon is a good camera.
Both have strong points and both have weak points.

I think most CP5000 owners are robust enough to handle the fact
that you are buying a 707.

Cheers!

That's too bad that you already made your purchase because I had

What do you want for the 707??

If this is a serious post{which I doubt), I have a buyer for you.

Hi remember me, the Troll I believe!!. Well I have read with interest the many comments that my posting raised. I am very pleased to see that there are some sensible people out there who accept that someone else might have an opinion that goes against the grain on the Nikon forum, but unfortunately some of you are over-protecting Nikon too much.

Lets get some facts and myths right.
1. I am a Nikon user, and still use and highly rate my 990.

2. I have been a user of this site for over 3 years, but chose not to use my real name to put this posting on, because I feared the reaction, and in some instances quite rightly so.

3. I wanted a new camera to move to 5 megapixel, and was eagerly awaiting the 5000 like most people on this forum, but I really feel this is not a vast move forward on the 990, especially when using Genuine Fractals, which produces excellent results.

4. I checked out the report from Phil and Steve Digicam's and they are somewhat careful in their conclusions, but both reports really do not urge you to go out and buy a 5000. Whilst waiting for the 5000 reports I have tried out the F707, because I have a Sony Vaio, and have been impressed by its quality, plus I have a Sony Video Cam, again excellent quality. I was impressed by some of the features, and the quality of the lens is excellent.

5. Yes I admit there are some missing features, but I want a camera to get superb clear sharp photos, I use photoshop to make any adjustments to colour etc., and with a zoom 35mm - 190mm it means I can just capture even more shots I have been unable to do with the 990. What really impressed me the most about the 707 was using the Nightshot facility. In a pitch black room, I switched the camera to Nightshot feature, and it used a set of lazer beams to focus in complete darkness, judge the right amount of flash, and produce a perfect picture as if the room had been fully lit. I have struggled for good shots in low light with the 990, especially with the focus in low light.

So a long winded explanation for which again I apologise, but I wanted to get over to those who believe me to be a Troll, well thats your opinion. I somehow feel that if you have to react so abusively and aggresively just because I did not chose a 5000, this time (and I stress this time because when Nikon bring out their next Coolpix and there is a marked upgrade from the 990/995, I will be first in the queue) then perhaps you are having to defend your decision to spend a large amount of money on not such a hot upgrade from the last Coolpix.

Oh and by the way, I have never ever posted on the Sony site or any other site in the past other than Nikon.

I've seen some extroidinary 5000 photos on this forum and some extroidinary Sony 707 photos. The photographer snapping the photo is everything.

Here's a potd at Steve's Digicams. --a 707 win.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/daily_dpotd.html

And I think Freds great 5000 photos higher up on this thread speak for themselves.

The question always comes down to which features are most important to you. Telephoto versus wide angle. Great color versus a little more resolution.

None of these prosumer digicams cameras are perfect yet.

Cute Arvin.

I've decided to give it to my eight year old son. It is simple enough for him to use. It may be a little heavy for him so he will pull it around in his little red wagon. When he outgrows it next year, we'll park it by the Sony Betamax.
I don't think you need to apologise to anyone. Judging by some of
