I just looked at the French - Canon website. His information has been pretty good regarding new cameras. His post today said that it is for sure (?) that Canon will release two new digitals - one a pro model and the other a D60. I think he is the one that started the idea that the D60 would be 6MP, CMOS and new autofocus. I hope he is right. That is just the camera I want to buy.

There isn't any way to verify his comments.

The web site is: HTTP: eosseries.ifrance.com/eosseries/en/eos_news.html

for the French Canon page.

Actually, it was DavidP in this forum who started the 6MP, CMOS, new autofocus "rumor." He didn't present it as a rumor, but as a wish list. That French site, which at various times predicted the 1D would have all manner of different specs, picked up on David's wish list and turned it into a baseless rumor. Note that a few days later, the site says the information was not correct. That happened after David and others here ridiculed the site for the original posting.

It seems that this site is now alluding to the news on the Chasseur d"Images site. They, as I recall, had the 1D right the first time they printed anything. (My recollection may be incorrect, but I don't think so.) The link to that site is: http://www.photim.com/Infos/UneInfo.asp?N=470

Less three weeks to PMA. We can wait.

Chasseur d'Images is a pretty serious magazine, far less advertiser-dominated than, say, Pop Photo. They have often refused to sign manufacturer NDAs so they could reveal information they had obtained by other channels without violating the embargo.

Their information seems to be quite specific about the 1DS, but the D60 is just mentioned as a rumor without specifics. The leaked information on the new L and DO lenses seems quite solid. Interestingly, the article implies the rumored 24-105 mm "L" would also be a DO lens.

Here is a translation for the French-impaired:

=============================================

Once again, Canon stands a good chance of being a star attraction of the PMA. Rumors are rife on the a hypothetical successor to the D30 called the D60, other unofficial information relate to a boosted version of the current 1D.

WARNING: unofficial information!

-----------

If our information is correct, one of the great stars of the PMA in Orlando would be a new professional SLR from Canon, designed to reinforce the current 1D line.

It would simply be called the EOS-1DS (S as in Studio) and would be equipped with a 6.1 Mpix sensor of identical size to the 4.48 Mpix sensor used in the standard 1D (27,5 x 18,1 mm).

The source for these sensors remains unclear, but our U.S. correspondents seem convinced this will be the Kodak Blue Plus Color CCD, a 6 Mpix version of which has been available (KAF 6302CE) since the launch of the Kodak DCS 760!

The arrival of such a sensor would require reducing the shooting speed slightly, and the EOS-1DS would be slower than the 4.48 Mpix model (8 fps over 21 frames). The price to pay for pros requiring "more substance for double spreads" and enough to satisfy reporters and designers frustrated with the 4.48 Mpix of the current EOS-1D.

If this information is confirmed (no official information was released), Canon will thus find itself with a better performing lineup than Nikon, with 4.48 Mpix instead of 2.7 Mpix on the D1H, and 6.1 Mpix instead of 5.7 Mpix partially interpolated on the D1X.

Pricing of the EOS-1DS remains to be seen. It would be judicious to place it at the same level as the speedy EOS-1D (same sensor base, few firmware modifications), or even reduce the price of the latter to make competitive headroom for the EOS-1DS.

RUMORS RELATIVE TO THE EOS D60
--------------------------------

Finally rumors about an EOS D60, a revised version of the D30 aimed at the prosumer market are becoming clearer, but Canon might decide to wait for the Paris photo show to announce it.

THREE NEW "DO"
-----------------------

In parallel to these bodies, it is almost certain Canon is currently working on three lenses with DO technology. This is still unofficial, but almost certain: Canon CPS Germany made available by mistake on its web site a document (PDF) concerning the 400 DO and where three following lenses were mentioned:
  • Canon EF 24-105 mm f/2,8 L IS USM ;
  • Canon EF 200-400 mm f/4 DO IS USM ;
  • Canon EF 500 mm f/2,8 DO IS USM.
We will watch as our correspondents fish around for information, they have been getting better catches in the U.S. than in Tokyo!

Thanks, Fazal. Your translation is a lot clearer than Babelfish's.

The posting on the French site was a cut-n-paste from this forum. Search for D60 6MP and you'll find it. It was about 6 or 8 weeks ago.

Yep, you heard it from me first

6 megapixels
1.2x multiplier
EOS-3 AF
BP-511's
etc
etc

I was simply making some assumptions (for a hypothetical discussion)

Can I sue the French for stealing my ideas? ;)

Interesting, but I know, I know just another rumor.

They would have to come to the point of agreeing that French is not the second (or first) language of 90% of the world as English is. I agree, where on earth are there this many web visitors, certainly not in the French speaking world.

Thanks Fazal for the translation. You are much better at it than Babble.

Lee's remark about the "arrogant French" had me thinking of pots-and-kettles, but then I noticed the "winky-face" at the end, ...hope everyone else noticed it, too.

Just want the record-to-show that not all Americans have the "Everything should revolve around me!" attitude.

As far as I'm concerned, an English-translation at the French site would be a courtesy, ...but it is certainly NOT an "obligation"!

Larry (Well, shut mah mouf! :-)
I wish those arrogant French would offer an English translation web
site. ;-)
