Dear all,

any idea how I can take a long exposure shot with my new D80 (i.e., minutes) without having to hold the shutter button pressed all the time, as happens when I simply select Bulb exposure mode?

Regards,
Sebastian

Put the camera in bulb mode and use the ML-L3 remote to trigger the shutter.
The 1st press on the remote button will open the shutter
The 2nd press of the remote button will close the shutter.

Ah, but I don't have either ...

Isn't there a bulb mode where you press the shutter once to start, and a second time to stop the exposure ???

No you have to hold the button down manually if you dont have a cable or remote, and that is not good for long exposures. ;-).

You should consider buying the remote online.

I'm thinking of getting the remote, myself. I have a D50. Assuming they use the same remote, I think it's ~$18 + ship.

If you understand the purpose of "bulb" then you understand that it's not possible to physically touch the camera to utilize the setting. It's not possible to touch it without inducing movement. That's why there have always been remote releases (and now IR).

how long does it need to be?

On the D50 I know that you can set the shutter speed (shutter priority or manual) to be pretty long (at least 1 or 2 minutes if memory serves I do not have the camera in hand)

Is it not the same on the D80?

You can also get the remote sent from Adorama in nyc

I got a cheap, third-party remote control on Ebay, that works just fine.

Well, if you expose for minutes, then the fraction of a second that movement occurs when pressing the button the second time to close the shutter in Bulb2 mode will not lead to any visible blur, no?

I find it a bit ridiculous that such a simple feature is missing from a camera like the D80, in particular since it's only firmware.

But OK, the ML-L3 seems available at amazon.de for 19.90€ incl. shipment. Here comes another item to carry ...

Thanks for your quick answers anyway.

If you own a universal IR remote control, you should be able to use it to trigger your D80. I use a Philips universal remote control for my D50.

No, and such a mode wouldn't make any sense either.

I was actually just playing around with long exposure yesterday, I just got an MC-DC1.

I'm quite impressed with the minimal amp glow at ISO 100, 30 minutes, compared to the D200.

If this were a useful image it could still be fully used, just cropping the image a little. 1 hour exposure actually doesn't really get any worse, just a little amp glow forming near the top center, again cropable.
