All,

I've about decided that the pro90 has the features I want ... long IS lens and reasonable pixel count. Anybody have suggestions as to where I might find the best legitimate price on it? Thank in advance.

Those prices are below delaer cost I believe. A more reasonable cost would be $850 as a minimum price.

Wise decision... got mine two weeks ago and have been thrilled with the results. You can see some of my initial playing if you'd like at:

Buydig.com was my choice after doing about a week of research. The $709 is hard to beat.

I bought one for myself and one for my department. I teach biology at the local college. Cameras were ordered approximately a week apart. I bought mine first, evaluated it and then ordered the departmental camera.

In BOTH cases I purchased the camera and asked for the cheap ground shipping. I was told on both occasions that it would take 3-4 days for the order to process before the camera would ship. In BOTH cases the shipping 'mysteriously' upgraded and actually ARRIVED two days after I placed the order.

YES each arrived BEFORE they said the shipping would even occur.

I AM NOT promising you that BuyDig.com will upgrade your shipping. I AM telling you that on two different orders about a week apart they DID do this on camera orders I was personally involved with. It may make a difference, I placed both of these orders BY PHONE rather than ordering online.

The cameras arrive new, with full warranty. I can see absolutely no downside. In each case I was asked, politely, ONCE if I had need of filters memory, cases etc. I explained briefly that I had plenty of CF cards and some filters from my 35mm days. The sales person politely went on with the order and commented 'well, I had to ask'. Fine by me, they weren't in the least pushy.

Great folks to buy from if my experiences are any indication!

I own Olympus E100/C2100 cameras, not a Canon Pro90 yet, but am considering buying one. I love these 10X Zoom IS EVF SLR like cameras.

I have the following observation on the Oly's and wonder if Pro90 has the same issue since the lenses are very similar or about the same.

E100/C2100 makes a low humming sound whenever the camera is on. The noise is not that audible unless you put your ear pretty close to the camera body.

People explain that it is from the IS mechanism, and the very low noise is there whether you set the IS ON or OFF. It is always there when the camera is on (you have to put your ear up close to the camera body to hear it). It is supposed to be quite normal. OK.

But I also notice that when I hold my camera 90 degree ClockWiise (for taking a "vertical" or "portrait" shot), the low humming sound turns into a much more audible higher pitch noise: Tzzzzzzeeeeeeeeeeeee..... You can hear it without putting the ear close to the camera body. I think other Oly E100/C2100 owners have reported the same observation too.

Another interesting observation is that when I turn the camera 90 degree the other way - Counter-ClockWise, it doesn't generate the higher pitch audible noise.

I have noticed the same thing on both my E100/C2100.

My first question is: Does the same thing happen to Canon Pro90? Pro90 owners, please try and let us know.

My second question is: If my observation is correct, should we always turn the camera 90 degree only Counter-ClockWise, and avoid the 90 degree ClockWise position, when we have a need to turn the camera sideway to take pictures?

Thanks a lot for answers in advance.

go check out pricescan.com or techbargain.com - they will do some good instant price checkin for you, then you can check out the reseller rating at resellerratings.com - that should help you out.

If you've got an Amex Blue card, I would consider buying locally from somebody who will let you play with the camera before buying, and who can replace it if there is a problem (I did both of these) and pricematch to buydig or someplace like that.

Just remember the $250 max rebate per purchase...
and i think i might want one too. my amex card is in. what do you

My Pro90 makes no noise whatsoever. The only noise that I can hear is if I am zooming and place my ear directly on the side of the lens barrel. That is one thing that struck me right off about the Pro90 when I first bought it -- how silent it was, especially after getting used to the clicking and grinding that my Nikon 950 made.

Thanks for the reply.

We were talking possibly about the I.S. (Lens Image Stabilization mechanism) noise.

Yes, compared with Nikon's, even later models such as 990 and 995, Oly's are very quiet too.

So you couldn't hear the supposedly I.S. mechanism (with or without IS actually ON) humming noise with your ear close to the Pro90? Did you try turning the camera 90 deg CW while pointing the lens straight forward (which would make the Oly's I.S. noise slightly louder)?

If no noise at all for Pro90, then perhaps Canon Pro90 is a better built camera, at least with respect to the I.S. Lens - even though Canon's and Oly's are supposedly very similar or even the same (Canon Patent).

Congrats on your purchase. Though the price you mention is below dealer cost, so I wonder how they do it. Volume does cut it, for Canon has set up a price schedule that makes it an even playing field for its dealers.

Just a word of caution when trying to buy by price alone...

Here's a link for buydig.com. Listed at $709. I bought mine from
them a few months ago, good company to deal with.

The Pro 90 has been out for a long time - much longer than the
G2 and we could see a new model at PMA. Before buying, I would wait
two weeks to see what Canon has to offer. If they do come out with
a replacement for the Pro 90, there will certainly be discounts on the
current model.
