I've just purchased a K10D. It seems like a very well-made machine that will be a pleasure to use. However, I am troubled that I cannot find the procedure for cancelling/suppressing the flash. I keep reading the manual and fiddling with the menus, but I haven't been able to solve the problem yet.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

If you are shooting in AUTO mode (Green band) the flash will be raised and used qhenever the light is too low.
Select Program AE mode (P) and then:
  • Pres Fn button
  • Press down arrow to select the flash mode
  • Press either left or right arrow to select any non-auto flash (i.e. without the letter A).
Good luck!

K10D's flash does not pop up automatically. So basically, it will only flash if you pop up the flash yourself. If you keep the flash down or retracted, it will not use the flash.

Thanks, Lak. This does indeed seem to be the case. What a relief.... and how simple. I was just just accustomed to the Nikon Coolpix 8700, on which the flash popped up automatically in low-light conditions. On the other hand, the Pentax manual seemed unclear on this issue.

Again, thanks for the help!

All the best,

Pentax SLR/DSLRs have never, ever (at least in my living memory) that auto-popup feature (a feature which smacks of 'amateur' to me) thank goodness. It seems to be the domain of low end Canons and digicams... so it's not a feature you are likely to see so why should the Pentax manual even mention the lack of it? That's my view anyway...

Actually, quite a few of the film SLRs did have this feature - in fact most of the ZX/MZ series (except the ZX-5 or ZX-M). Cameras such as ZX-7, ZX-L (MZ-6), ZX-60..... all had auto pop-up flash.

My *ist-DS has auto-popup, but I wouldn't call it a feature. ;)

It works in the green mode, and possibly some of the pictograph modes, though I wouldn't know because I never use them.

That "feature" was the first thing I turned off when I got the camera. Of course since you can't override the default behavior in green mode, that also means I never use green. P, or Av are where I do most of my shooting.

Having recently acquired the K10D, I'm glad to see that feature has been eliminated.

However, do you find the hook a bit too "close" to the edge, i.e. the camera does not "feel" that it'll keep the flash from springing up for long? When I close the flash it does not have the reassuring "click" and the button movement I heard and saw back when I was using the HP912 (aka EI2000).

Faint click, that's about it. I feel this part of the camera is engineered to the edge too much, where the hook should and could be holding the flash by at least 1.5mm, I feel that it's just holding the flash by 0.5mm.

What you cannot turn off, though, and what I find somewhat annoying is the flash symbol blinking in the view finder.
I think there should be an option "OFF" in the flash menue.

I also was looking for the "OFF" feature when I got my camera. Realized that you just keep flash down and it will not pop up.

I would like to turn off the flashing flash symbol as another poster has said, it is very annoying.

Oh god no! I have had 5 Pentax SLR/DSLRs with internal flash and none of them have had that awful auto pop-up feature. Maybe I chose the less entry level models (e.g. SFXn, MZ5n, *istD etc.) -

I hope they have forgotten it for future models.....
