I have something to own up to. I am a fanatical Nikon enthusiast, having had the 950, upgraded it to the 990, and was anxiously awaiting the 5000. When I read Phil's report on the 5000, it made me re-think, and I started to review the Sony F707. Anyway to cut a long story short, I bought it a few days ago, and all I can say is Wow. It is brilliant, easy to use, focus is pin sharp in low light conditions thanks to the infra-red matrix, and the quality of the images are truly outstanding. I never thought I would say this, but I am now ready to ditch the 990. I had the idea I would run the two side by side, but after seeing the quality of the images of the F707, I cannot see a use for the Nikon.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nikon, and I am now saddled with loads of Compact Flash Cards, an Iomega CF Portable Clik Drive, etc. etc. not to mention additional lenses and Flash, I was more than keen to keen buying Nikon, but they need to seriously upgrade their digital pro-sumer cameras before I will consider buying again.
I am ducking, I said you wouldn't like it!!

That's too bad that you already made your purchase because I had one to sell to you real cheap. You might still condider it, you never can have too many Christmas tree ornaments.

After about 30 years of semi-pro photo taking, etc. I've found that the best way to understand just what a camera can do is to read the damm instructions. Most of the bellyachers on this forum haven't and I think they should before they bag on a product as fine as this camera, the Coolpix 5000. I've run every test that somebody has suggested on this forum on my 5000 and I can't find a thing wrong with it. The service at Nikon is second to none, and I'll put my photos from this camera up against anyone's using any digital tool on the market today. If you don't use a Nikon why not solicit your views on another forum allready!

Hey, chill. I think you did not read the posting clearly, I am a Nikon user, and yes I do take a lot on board from the Nikon forum and its users, and their issues regarding the 5000. Thats what forums are for. The fact of the matter is quite clearly the lens on the 5000 is not up to scratch. I will buy another Nikon when they bring out a camera that is going back to the quality of the 990/995, the 5000 just ain't it.

Your a brave man Ray. I know what you are saying, I just haven't acted on it yet. I have been looking at other cameras even before the Dpreview reveiw of the 5000 came out. I just didn't like what I saw with the image quality of the 5000. I have enjoyed my 990 for over a year and a half and hope to continue using it for many years to come. I have learned a lot with this camera. Now I need something better. I really don't feel that the 5000 is that big of a jump to justify spending another grand on a camera. (Echos of the 995). It seems that the image quality, with blown out highlights and cronic CA, really degrades the other qualities that the 5000 brings to the coolpix line. Unfortunately on this fourm if you speak your mind and it goes against the Nikon crowd you are automatically strung up, tared and feathered as I am sure I will be for posting to this thread. Watch, someone will tell me to leave the forum for speaking my mind. Of course I will ignore them. I have seen some excellent photo's from all types of prosumer digital cameras, including the 5000. I attribute 95% of this to the photographer, not the camera. I have a couple of shots from my first camera, a Richo 4200 1.2 megapixel that still blow me away. I have a thousand more photos from that camera that I keep buried in the back of my CD drawer.

I purchased my 990 becuase it could give me the best "to film" experience in my price range that I could find at the time. Other manufactures have produced excellent cameras in the past year and a half. I have decided to bypass the 5000 band wagon and wait for Nikons next offering. In my defense, I have been using digital cameras for about two years. I have read the manuals, reseached on the internet, experimented, been as excited as anyone else when a new Nikon digital prosumer camera is announced and have spent thousands of dollars on my hobby. I am not the world's greatest photographer and I do not own the absolute best equipment. I am in photography to learn and have fun not to take up arms. I will not take the attitude that "you would have to pry my nikon from my cold dead hand before I would use an other manufacturers camera" nor will I attack others for having a different opinion or camera then myslef. Before I spend another grand on a camera I will have a very critical eye, no matter what label is on the camera.
Let the flaming begin.
David Ramsay.

I do hate what you said in your thread. I'm new at photography and have invested good money in the CP995 and various accessories. Now I am second guessing myself.

Yes indeed. The quick gratification of the Sony will give way to inevitable remorseful inconvenience, while the 5k grows fonder and brighter with experience.

Have you actually looked at some of the beautiful work that has been posted here and elsewhere?
... It seems that the image quality, with blown out highlights
and cronic CA, really degrades
Again, have you looked at what has been posted here, and read ANY of the discussions about proper exposure for highlights, and CA issues?

It doesn't appear so. if you could say you worked and worked and just never figured out how to get it right -- well, the comments might be worth a nickel. But since you don't seem to have gotten any farther than someone else's "first day" shots, a nickel is a considerable stretch.

First of all Grant I have the right to my own opinion even if it does not match yours. I also have a right to express that opinion. If you live in a free country then you have to agree with me. Also in my post I said that I have seen some excellent photo's including some that have come from the 5000 and I attributed this to the operator. Figure that one out will you. I follow this forum everyday and I have seen the postings and the bashing of others like yourself and I must say that I do not like what I see. If I have to cross my fingers and stand on one foot to acheived a half decent photo then there is something wrong. I have seen the examples that people are posting and I still see blown out highlights and a lot of CA. No matter how loud you yell I will still have my own opinion.

I'm still trying to decide between the 5000 and the 707. For sure, the 707 has it's share of problems. The major problem I see with the 707 is the fact that whites and yellows seem to over expose the picture...at least that's what I've noticed on several photos posted. Another other major problem that concerns me is the lack of a saturation control on the 707. While I don't especially like the idea of being held captive by Sony's proprietary peripherals, I guess it's something I could live with. The major negatives on the Nikon side seems to be the noise I've seen on some of the posted photos. Also, from the test results I've seen of the Nikon versus the Sony, the Sony seems to have an edge on resolution. At this point, I'm really having trouble deciding which one to get. Any one have any tie-breakers? Unfortunately, a lot of these "tests" that the gurus use seem to have little or anything to do with real-world use of the cameras. Maybe some of you 5000 owners can help me decide.

I would wait and see what is released at the big PMA show in a few weeks. I myself will be sorely tempted by a canon pro90IS/G2 hybrid, if it eventuates... 5MP, 5 or 7x zoom, RAW, swivel LCD, great external flash control (flash head actually zooms! :) etc...

and remember the 707 has awful (almost non-existent) external flash options
When I read Phil's report on the 5000, it made

Why don't you check his profile? What bought you over from the Sony forum? I noticed "Ray" appeared from nowhere, made this troll and disappeared. Did you decide to come over to the Nikon forum and attempt to revive it for him?

No, whoever he is didn't make too much difference. What I was really looking for is some of the 5000 users to make some input that would help me make a more informed decision.
