I am considering switching from a PC to a Mac but have read that there is no support for my Pentax *istDS camera. Does anyone know if this is correct, or does it just mean that the delivered iPhoto application won't open .PEF files?

Also, any comments on the benefits of using a Mac for amateur photo organizing/editing would be appreciated. I currently use ACDSee and am fairly happy with it. My understanding is that iPhoto does not offer the same functionality as ACDSee, and that I would have to purchase Aperture.

Sure the *ist DS is supported... you just have to download and install the free Camera Raw Support Update 1.0.1 from Apple's Web site. After installing it iPhoto, Aperture and even Preview will display your PEF files.

I use a DS and Mac support is excellent. What you read about is that Aperture and iPhoto will convert .PEF files to whatever. Lots of professional photographers use Macs for managing their entire process as fine tools exist for all the components of digital photography.

As a DS owner I would recommend you try out Raw Developer for .PEF file image processing. The color renditions are quite satisfying. Raw Developer is also a Mac-only solution. I use Raw Developer and ACR/CS2 for my .PEF work. If I was starting from scratch I would strongly consider Aperture; personally I have a lot of learning time invested in CS2/Bridge/ACR etc. and will hold off on another new tool.
