Hi, currently i have this lens together with the kit lens on the 350d. I was wandering what lens anyone would recommend to cover up to 70 mm. I am really impressed with the results of using the L lens and would hope to eventually upgrade to a full frame camera.

I now have Canon's 24-85 as a walk-around, and I'm looking at the 70-200 f4 L to complement it before replacing the 24-85 with something substantially better. I myself have been thinking about the following combo:

Sigma 10-20 or Canon 10-22 for ultra wide angle
Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Canon 70-200 f4 L

Numerous people on this forum seem to be saying that they're not missing the gap between 50 & 70 mm, so the Tamron could be for you. Unless you have the funds for Canon's 17-55 f2.8 IS.

And if you're planning to go full frame in the near future, perhaps 17-40 L would be worth a closer look? Again you'd have the gap between the zooms, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

What about the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. I've checked out some prices and it ranges from around £600.00 up.

Is it worth the money?

It gets good reviews on fredmiranda.com, but I was less impressed by its performance in the photozone.de test. Do you reckon you'll need the f2.8? Thanks to 5D's better high ISO performance and shallower depth of field, f4 of the 17-40 L sounds fast enough plus I'd personally really like to play around with that ultra wide angle of 17mm. But then I'm also very budget conscious, £600 up scares me.

That's the version of the 17-85IS for those that want full frame eventually. The 85 will give you the low light ability (makes up for loss of IS in my opinion) and both lenses will work for a FF camera in the future. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a 50 1.8 as well.

The other option, a 24-70, has been mentioned, and will cover most of what you need, but it's expensive, heavy, and not wide enough for a crop.

I have the 17-40 now as my walkaround, and will get the 24-105 once I go full frame, leaving my 17-40 as my super-wide lens.

You have several choices:

A) 17-55 L USM F/2.8. Arguably the best lens for a cropped camera--just ignore the hole between 55mm and 70 mm.
B) 24-70 L USM F/2.8. A truely great lens

C) 24-105 L USM F/4. With more range, sharp optics, and IS a contender with the 24-70. Many prefer this lens to the 24-708 due to the extra reach. Many just like lenses with IS.

I don't disagree with any of these choices, just want to point out that the 17-55 2.8 IS is not FF-compatible, and the OP wants to go full frame eventually, so that info should be noted

Been there, done that. I've got the 350D and I tried to get away cheap by trying EF 17-40 and Tamron 17-50 until I settled for the 17-55 F2.8IS.

It's the only lens of these three which will match the 70-200 F4L. Having had it since it came out I no longer want to go full frame as there is no FF equivalent. Give it a serious thought.

I've got the 70-200F4L and 85mm 1.8 as well and finally it feels that there is no immediate need for a new lens. It's a weird feeling, though.

The 24-70 f/2.8L is not perfect, but it is a very good lens. I find that
this is the lens I use most. I also have a 17-40L, but I don't require
anything wider than 24mm for most of my shooting on an XT/350D.
Many people want wider than 24mm on a cropped-sensor body, but
it suits me fine for most shots.

The color and contrast is fantastic on the 24-70L. Mine is better at
wide than at telephoto.

25mm, f/11

48mm, f/3.2

70mm, f/7.1

Some beautiful images. Thanks for all of your advice. The lenses mentioned are the ones that i had thought of my self. My main concern is that i buy lenses that would be compatible with FF. Or may be I don't need FF or is that another question altogether?

Get the lens you really want now, and it should be pretty easy to
sell it if you need/want to go to full frame later. That said, I do think
the 24-70L is a great lens for either crop or full-frame. The 17-55IS is
a lens worth checking out, as is the Tamron 17-50.

Full frame bodies (essentially the 5D is what we are talking about)
are expensive. You may be using a crop body for a while, but
that's a judgment call to make.

I use a Tamron 28-75. For image quality and weight it compares with the 70-200f4. Build is not quite as good but it's cheaper.
