I want a "snapshot" lens such as the 28-135 that I can use for casual shooting. I know the image quality is not as good, so I am wondering if anyone knows about its replacement coming out soon. I heard rumors about a 24-100 something IS lens. Does anyone know what is coming out? Should I wait or buy now?

Thanks,

Jamil

Latest that I've heard it's gonna be 24-105mm IS USM f/2.8L and it's price is at least twice of 28-135's!

I don't know who told you that the image quality is not so good. I have mine for the last 2 years and its been great. Slow but great especially with the IS. Definitely good enough as a casual shooting lens.

Not as good as what? A $1500 "L" lens? Other than being a little slow in low light, image quality is very good. If fact I've seen photos taken with some "L" lenses that were not very impressive at all. Don't listen to rumors. If you can, take your camera to a shop where they will let you try different lenses. Then go home and look at the pictures you took at the shop. I did that and went right back and bought the 28-135 and never regretted it.

Jamil:

I have and LOVE the 28 - 135 lens I have, exchanged for the original one shipped to me by B&H. The original one exhibited poor focusing, while this one focuses VERY well, and the image quality is excellent.

BUT the PMA meeting is but a few weeks away, why not wait until at least then to assess your options, after the new lenses are announced, as expected?.

It may not be IS. If it is, expect to pay at least $1500.

I originally bought an EF 24-85mm lens feeling that I wanted a general zoom wider than my 28-105. Shortly after I'd purchased it, I was blowing some lint off the rear of the lens and noticed that this caused condensation on the interior elements of the lens. Reasoning that there must be a problem with the sealing I returned it and was given another. Same problem! The 24-85mm lens is not properly sealed against dust or humidity. Sent an e-mail to Canon's Canadian and American offices pointing this out, never heard back.
So I swapped it for the 28-135 IS lens. End of problem.
Jamil, I don't think you'll be dissapointed with this lens.

I've been using it as an everyday lens for nearly 2 years now and haven't found fault with anything.

At the tele end of the zoom range it rivals my 100-300L lens. It's a tiny bit softer at the wide end of the range but still very acceptable ( and I'm comparing those shots to 17-35L results) and the IS function is really handy to have when shooting late in the day, in dim interiors or even open shade w/slower film.

Go to my site http://www.torontowide.com and in gallery 2 at the top of the page you'll see a shot of the Scarborough Bluffs done at a aprox.1/15 sec. ,end of the day, 28mm w/Internal Stabilizer on. The image is actually 8 shots stitched together, and not one of those images was soft. I've printed this panorama to aprox. 30"x 10" and believe me it's unbelievably sharp considering the slow shutter speed.

Just remember to switch the IS off when finished because the stabilizer unit continues to use current from the battery even when the camera is switched off.

I recomend it as a general purpose lens. Whether to buy it or not really depends on whether your style is biased towards wide angle or tele shots. If you like wide shots you're likely to find 28mm too restrictive.

I have sold my 28-70L because it wasn't all that much better then my 28-135 IS. The 28-135 IS is Canon's BEST everyday lens for more than just "snapshot" shooting. It is much better than the 28-70L for a carry around lens. The 70mm just isn't long enough for snapshot shooting. If there is a new lens coming out it won't be any sharper than the 28-70L and therefore won't be a better "value" than the 28-135 IS. Comparing prints between the two, with good light the 28-135 IS is very, very close to the same picture quality as the 28-70L and costs less than half the price.

Sealed against dust! No way a consumer lens is sealed at all! Everytime you zoom your 28-135 in and out you are pumping air, dust, and dirt into the lens and body. Many have claimed that you can feel the air blowing into their eye!! All of the lenses that change length with zooming or focusing, or have rotating front lens elements will pull air into the lens and body of the camera. Invest in a fixed length L lens that is sealed against the elements if you want to keep the dust out.

The people at Calumet claimed that there was no 28-105 coming out - although it was posted on their website it was an error. I would tend to believe that it was an error since they did say that there will be a 200-400 L 2.8 coming out. If they were going to deny the one lens, why not both?

Both I and a friend of mine have tested our 28-135IS's against our 28-70 2.8L's and found the exact same thing. The L lens has a "tad" more contrast but not really sharper. I frankly find the color about dead on with them both. For walk around outdoor use I would still prefer to have the IS on for safety. For speed of course I'll choose the L lens, but frankly I haven't had it on my camera YET as it just hasn't been necessary. I am sure the time will come (otherwise I'll sell it). As far as all around utilitarian outdoor use you really can't beat it. Those that have bought that 24-85 lens and claim it's superiority IMHO just got a bad 28-135 because I sure didn't find that to be the case. It seems there can indeed be some variance in lenses. I'll take the IS thanks....

I also find the 28-70L to be sharper. I rarely use the 28-135 now. mark

Thanks for all the responses...I think I will wait and see what happens at PMA and then if nothing new, buy the 28-135.

Hey I agree with everyone else, my 28 to 135 is GREAT. Roger

But you fail to consider aperture! If this new, mythical, 24-104 F2.8 IS L does turn out to be real, it'll be a great lens for me. I use a lot of telephoto, and F2.8 admits much more light than F5.6. I'll miss the extra telephoto of the 28-135, it's a good tradeoff for more light gathering and more on the wide end. I suspect I'll be willing to put up with the added weight and added cost.

I don't usually think waiting is good, but in this case, I suggest the original poster wait until PMA is over (late Feb) to make a decision.

He states "snapshot" and "casual shooting". There is no better lens for that then the 28-135 IS. The other thing that comes with f/2.8 is very little DOF. That's great for portraits but is terrible for candids, which is what snapshots and casual shooting are. So you can see that I did consider aperture.

Barry,

You're right...Many times I am in low light and use 2.8 and find that the person shifted slightly and...oops...its now out of focus. I am going to wait for PMA and then decide.
