Do you use Lumix simple viewer?

Are you aware you do not need to use anything?

Just trying to learn and it's slow going!

As Gene said, for transferring images from the card, you do not need anything special, windows Explorer will do it.

For viewing the pictures you might want something else besides what window has to offer. For viewing I use XnView. I like it a lot, and it's free. There are also other free ones available, just do a search in the web.

There is one that I really like,
It's called Google Picasa,

Once you install it it automatically starts copying the photos onto your hard drive, even before you've given the photos a directory name, making it the fastest possible transfer, actually there are lots on really nice features about it, built in slideshow, web albums, timelines, search options etc.

Play with it for about 1/2 an hour, and it's really a treat.

Here is a web album that I exported out of picasa, it re-sized the album and created the html (though I modded the index.html file)

http://ben.ezymail.com/BensUsapics/Bestof2006/index.html

It contains the 53 of the most interesting or best shots I took in 2006, most from a Panny Fz50.

I love taking photos of the beautiful things God's made, the closer you get, the more beautiful they appear.

I do not like the new software with the fz50 and it's now set to default. I'll have to do some investigating to fix that. I don't like using windows explorer either because it's too easy to delete a photo. I would love a program that also makes it difficult to drag and drop photos/folders into other folders. I hate it when that accidentally happens and I don't know where the folder went!

I use the downloader that is part of Photoshop Elements ... still at 4, just got 5 but have yet to back up and install it. If you have PSE, it's the easiest way to go.

I've seen a quirk in communication between the downloader and the photo browser in PSE4, but it's not a downloader problem, the files are always downloaded correctly. The quirk is that sometimes when PSE4 says "the only pictures in the window are the ones just downloaded" it is wrong; they are not the pictures just downloaded. I've learned not to panic but just click "back to all photos" and sure enough the just downloaded photos are the newest ones - no problems. I hope (and expect) that once I install PSE5 this won't happen again.

I down load my pics to the computer manually.
Plug in card, Open My computer, Open Removeable Disc (---)
Open DCIM folder. Copy Photos.

Open New Folder on hard drive. Paste Photos.

You can then close everything.

Open Irfanview, Open New folder, open 1st pic. VIEW FULL SCREEN. and then arrow through all the new pics.

http://www.irfanview.com/

I have found tht irfanview is the best viewer out there as you can look through the photos at full screen size. I do pp in PSE 3 but really like irfanview for deciding which pics to work on.

The program is also the fastest to open when you click on the short cut icon.

Sounds involved but is very quick in practice and you are able to put the new folder where you want it in your Hard drive file system.

Do you use Lumix simple viewer ... Or something else to get the photos from the memory card onto the PC?
In case you haven't discovered this already - you can copy the pictures directly. Here's how:
------------------------

Plug the camera's SD card into a SD/USB adapter, then plug that into the pc's USB port.

(Or plug the SD into the computer's SD slot if there is one).

Open My Computer, go to H:\DCIM (or whatever drive letter represents the SD reader.)

At this point, right-click on H:\DCIM, choose 'Make a shortcut', and put it on your desktop for quick access to the card in the future.

Then:

You will see folders in H:\DCIM like this:

100_PANA
101_PANA
103_PANA

Simply drag them onto your desktop.

Subsequently, peek into the desktop PANA folders to determine the highest picture number, then go drag new pictures from the SD card into that folder. When a new PANA folder is found in the card, drag it to the desktop.

('Drag' doesn't delete the source if the source/destination drive letters are different.)
--------------------------------

Real Simple Backups for Disaster Recovery:

My procedure (above) considers the desktop folders a backup for the camera's card and vice versa.

I don't purge my SD cards until I have made a DVD. I make this by copying the desktop PANA folders to DVD, then storing the DVD far away from the camera and pc.

If the backup procedure is this simple, it's more likely to actually be used.

Hi Ben....I use Picasa and the web albums connected with it but the web album won't let you post your photos to this site, only links to them. I think Picasa is great overall but when you process and crop images, Picasa doesn't appear to save them to your hard drive. It only 'saves' them in Picasa. And I think that's kind of odd. (though it's great if you want to go back later and undo the changes)

Suggestions?
