I want to travel with one lens to the upcoming Macworld Expo. I'm looking for one lens to do it all.
  • good for shooting inside auditorium from about 200 ft away from subject on stage (Steve Jobs), varying degress of lighting available depending on what is being shown on the large presentation screen, no flash allowed... f2.8 would be best?
  • good for shooting products on show floor, in hand, in display cases, etc...

Can't go wrong with the 24-105. This is a versatile, sharp and well built lens.

Why just whip out your handy Canon 18-200/1.4 L IS! That’ll do ‘er fine!

Anything that will take a good picture in low light at 200 feet will NOT be suitable for display cases on the floor.

Your best combination would probably be something like the Canon 17-55/2.8 IS ($1,000) or Tamron 17-50/2.8 ($450) AND the Canon 70-200/2.8 L IS. ($1,700). Your requirements don’t come cheap.

I've been reading reviews like mad and I think the EF-S 17-55mm would do the trick and it's not too bad on weight... it's not compact but I'm willing to sacrifice some weight for IQ and performance. Thanks for the recommendations.

How will the 17-55 get shots of a subject on stage 200 feet away?

It will take FINE, SHARP shots from 200 feet away! But the people will be kinda’ small :> )

The 17-55/2.8 IS would be excellent for floor shots and display case shots. I meant the 70-200/2.8 L IS for the 200 foot shots. It’s not ideal, but it’s sure a lot cheaper ($1,700 vs $3,900) and smaller (3.5 lb vs. 6 lb) than the other lens that may be suitable, the Canon 300/2.8 L IS!

..to shoot a person on a stage 200 feet away. I would suggest a Bigma on a tripod with MLU and shutter release. :)

Best image quality walkaround would be Tamron 28-75 for low $300s
