I'd love to see a travel version of the G7. Take a G7 and make a few adjustments:

1- 28mm wide angle. 3-4x zoom is plenty. Anymore than that and we start to have to make too many compromises.

2- I know everyone gushes about the build quality but I'd rather have it be lighter, meaning good plastic (ducking for cover.... ;-)

3- The lens, 2.0-3.5 please. I don't think that's asking for a miracle.

4- I don't want to carry or futz with lens adapters. As soon as you put on a lens adapter, your beltable camera isn't anymore. My S80's lens assembly seems plenty strong enough to be threaded at the end for a polarizer.

Maybe Canon could call it a G7T or something. I buy it in a heartbeat.

lot of people here i think would like a G7 with 8mp and 28mm lens but Canon apparently feels that more megarpixels and more zoom is what sells

I am sure Canon will bring out a sucessor to the s80 - ie a p&s 28mm with 1/1.8" sensor. Whether it is called the s90 or the G8 remains to be seen.

...as I read it, the S series is a smaller version of the G series.

From the review of the S60 on this site: "What we have here ladies and gentlemen is a compact G5"

I've been more than happy with my S60. It fills a void between my pocketable Casio Z850 and Nikon D70. All offer lots of control.

A compact G7 with a 28mm and IS? I'll pre-order the same day as the announcement.

This macro issue on the S80 puzzles me. I have an S70, which I assume is similar. I get out of focus shots at close distances, but if I use manual focus I can fill the shot with a one or two-inch object and it is sharp as a tack. The manual focus zoom is very useful. According to the owners manual the macro range starts at 1.6 inches.

Am I missing something here or is there a good reason why I can't find the S80 at some of the popular stores? I looked at B&H, J&R, BestBuy, CircuitCity, CompUSA - none of them list the S80 although some of them list a few accessories for the camera. Was the model pulled of the market for some reason?

Canon pulled it from the market.

They didn't give a reason. Speculation ranges from poor sales to an evil plot to sell other cameras and lenses.

I have an S80 that I am considering trading for a G7. I'm still thinking about it, but if anyone if interested, let me know. It's in perfect condition: hasn't been dropped at all. It does have some minor scratches on the front cover which I find to be inevitable from sliding the lends cover open. If you don't have a G7 it for, I am willing to take $480 as that is the cheapest I found the G7 for.
