My daughter got a haircut today, she likes it so much she wishes she could cut Christmas break to show it to her girlfriends. This from the same girl who could not wait for vacation - go figure. Anyways, I took some pictures when we got home and tried to fix one of them up a tad. See the orginal and my retouched. My question, what could I have done better? Links to larger versions of both are provided below. Any suggestions appreciated.

Removed obvious, non perminant blemishes (but not the mole; don't believe in hiding beauty marks, but a big believer in keeping it natural), and eyeballed the white balance. Also opened up the shadows a bit. Final refocus step and brightening. Also whitened the teeth (young ones should have white teeth. Should see how yellow my teeth are now; lol). :)

Have a good one!

Thanks for your work. I whitened the teeth too but I think you went a bit further than I did and I like it.

My daughter loves it. And thanks for posting a link to what you did. I want to try that this weekend with another pic. If I get a chance I will post my results here.

Play before bed is a good thing. I think it's pretty cool which I makes me old I suppose. I think the term these days is "wicked".

Thanks - didn't think to clone the organizer which is what you see on the right, rather I was messing with the crop as much as I could. Your answer seems much easer. Also like the increase in saturation.

Stephen - thanks. I am learning a lot here. I know what I did with my efforts and have learned a lot seeing what you and others have done. Two things jump out at me, one is that attacking the background is not limited to cropping. I knew that, but for some reason it never seemed like an option when I was workinng the pic. Secondly, I need to find a good way to smooth out skin inperfections with some a tad more sophisticated than the "Magic healing brush". I suppose now would be a good time to find out how good the search option works on dpreview forums.

... beautiful daughter too. I tried to enhance the softness by the Beautifier plug-in (Red Paw Media), and reduced saturation a little.

Of course you have to look fo yourself wether it is a further improvement or not.

1st pic is your retouchment, 2nd is mine.

Mario,

Thank-you for the very kind words. I like what you did and so does my daughter.

BTW, I enjoyed your portraits gallery. Lots of nice smiles. I especially liked the older gentleman, the one with thick glasses and blue hat. It's nice to see a smile on an older face like that, so often portraits of older folks are sad or serious. Also, the smile of the brown haired girl with hoop ear-rings could light up a Christmas tree.

Happy New Years to EVERYONE.
