Check it out folks !? Why would anybody buy it ?

These are two shots with the same G2 (of course). One with the good old lensmate and one without. Check the lower right corner.

The lensmate allows you to add filters, converter lenses, and protects the lens. That is why we buy it.

It's no secret that lensmate (any adapter tube) will shade the G2's internal flash in the lower right corner at wide angle. Lensmate even has sample photos in their "answers" section.

Solutions are: remove the lensmate when using the internal flash, zoom in when using the lensmate with internal flash, or don't use the internal flash.

Yes ! Am I not supposed to?

Does that mean I'd have to take it off everytime I need to use the flash!
Sheesh! What a pain :(

Used the internal flash... didn't you?

You are shooting wide angle with the onboard flash. This is a known problem and has been discussed before. Just back up a little and zoom in a little and you will not get the shadow. If you want to shoot wide angle you will need an external flash or very steady hands or a tripod.

For validation of your choice, you should see how the canon supplied adapter compares!! - besides not quite matching aesthetically and made out of plastic.
The lensmate was designed to allow add-on lenses/filters. It
serves that purpose.

There's no other option that won't block the internal flash.

The Lensmate is one of the best things to ever happen to the G1/G2. It's solidly made as opposed to Canon's cheap plastic adapter, allows you to keep a filter on to protect your precious original lens, and add other filters and lenses. It also gives you something to cradle in your hand when you take your shots, and is reasonably priced. The internal flash is going to look really weak if you buy a Canon 420 EX with ETTL. You'll never miss the internal flash again.
Does that mean I'd have to take it off everytime I need to use the
flash!

Or zoom in a little.

The G2 built in flash, like nearly all built in flashes, has trouble covering the whole frame at full wide angle (look at the other 3 corners) has limited range, causes red-eye, causes hot spots on shiny subjects (look at the door), is too harsh for a flattering portrait - need I go on? I use a lensmate and don't regard the limit to wide-angle use of the built in flash as much of a loss.

Do yourself a favour and try the G2 with an external, bouncable, flash. One of the big advantages of the camera is that it will accept almost any external flash. You won't get ETTL unless you use Canon EX series units, but Canon's ETTL isn't that great anyway (nowhere near as good as Nikon's "D" system) so you can get just as good results with any cheap thyristor auto flash. I'm sure yuo'd be very pleased with the results

For the ultimate flash experience, the G2 will mate up very well with studio flashes.

(The lensmate doesn't cause any shading with external units, at any focal length, of course)--Richard C. South Australia

How about Tiffen?

Atleast, It won;t block AF assist lamp completely.

I use it as safety. In full zoom it obstructs AF-lamp slightly causing failures
some times.

Flashwise, I never saw so much difference.

Same on G1 too.

And its cheap $10 and very small.

Thank folks for the blazing replies :) You Canon folks are just wonderful !

Hey .. what do I know. I thought a simple piece of tube that is supposed to protect the lens, will do it at all times ! Noooo... It only protects it when you shoot without a flash! Go finger :)

To put it bluntly, you've completely missed the point of the Lensmate.

Didn't you research it before you bought it?

Cynical question-
Why use the onboard flash? It sucks.

If all you want to do is protect the lens, the lens cap that comes with the camera does a very good job :-p.

If you're going to be shooting indoors with flash, listen to these wise folks and get a 420EX. Why pay extra for a camera with hotshoe if you're not going to take advantage of it? Once you shoot with the 420EX you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. The difference is amazing - bounce flash is the way to go!
