These pictures were taken with the nikon D40 JPEG straight of the camera, no retouching at all, just 40% scaling with photoshop. Picture detail using the kit lenses is great and noise levels at ISO1600 are extremely low.

Tell me what do you think. Thanks.

It looks like you are off to a great start! The noise levels do seem to be very good.
Thanks for sharing so we can all see what this little camera is capable of.

BTW...Where did you find a potato chip tree? LOL! My kids would love to have one of those in the yard! :)

I was pretty sure the D40 was going to be a winner and the more I see the more I'm certain. Great shots (straighten the first one).

Let's hope Nikon continues this trend -

Good luck and keep shootin'

It is called Lunaria annua. It's dutch name is Judaspenning, named after the coins Judas Iskariot received for betraying Jesus Christ.

Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance or a stranger.

I'm not sure that I agree with you on the bokeh. The picture with the potatot chip plant looks a little too "electric" at the top where the background trees baranches are. Also the one picture where there are circles of light in the background look a little donut shaped. I have the earlier 18-55 and haven't spent much time checking out it's bokeh but I would guess they are the same. But this is nit picking. The pictures are nice and the jpeg at low ISO is bound to be as good as it gets.

I'm just being picky on the bokeh. In general I think that if anyone is going to use the word "bokeh" they might as well be picky. I won't use my 18-55 lens if I have any choice about trying to get good bokeh, but I wouldn't be SCARED of using it either. It surely holds it's own and has a place in my camera bag most of the time. It has saved me big bucks by preventing me from having to buy an expensive 18mm wide angle lens. As long as mine works I'll keep using it and if it breaks, I'm pretty sure I'll get another one.

Agree. I am picky too, but for a cheap kit zoom lens i think Bokeh is nice. Foliage, and trees are really the hardest background for a lens to render a smooth Bokeh. And many Nikkor Zooms where always regarded as sharp but with harsh Bokeh. So this is not too bad for a Nikkor ;-)

I really would like to test a D40 with my Manual Focus 45mm 2.8 P. Should be a really compact kit.

Btw, the best actual kit zoom lenses in the Bokeh field are the Olympus Digital Zuikos i think.

Do you think the noise levels look good on the first photograph? (?????)

Hello,

As you can see in the first post, this little camera takes great sharp pictures using its own 18-55 lenses and I would say "sharper" than average cameras at this level.

I'm thinking of purchasing the nikkor 50mm f1.8. Would this lense take even sharper pictures than the 18-55 ?? From the comments I have read I imagine so, but will the difference be noticeable ? I know that the 50mm f1.8 is not AF-S so it will not autofocus with my D40.

The kit lenses is only f5.6 at 55mm, that compared with f1.8 at 50mm is a great difference, what do you think? Would you get this prime lense for nikon D40 ?

Thank you.
