Los Angeles Skyline...

Nice (huge!) skyscrapers on the 1st one, beautiful mountains on the 2nd one (I didn't knew there was this kind of mountains near LA!).

I would like to see how the 1st one would look at night.

are these over sharpened?
They look fine to me... So which building did you shoot from? I'm guessing near the new Caltrans building?

For those interested, the US Bank building peaking out among the skyscrapers is (last I heard), the tallest U.S. building west of the Mississippi.

In the 2nd photo, at bottom-left: Olvera St (the "birthplace" of L.A.), just above it with the two dome structures: the large L.A. post office, to the right of that is Union Station (trains), in back of that, across the tracks: the tall MTA building, to the right of that in the mid-background: the L.A. County-USC Medical Center (aka TV's "General Hospital"), and the mountains in the background is the San Bernardino Mountains... could be the San Gabriel mountains to the west but not sure where one starts and the other ends.

Hey... you might have even gotten a picture of my father's house... just to the left of the MTA building. Would be fun to see a blow up of the area above the train tracks to the mountains just to the left side of the MTA building.

I was just in the MTA building vicinity yesterday... The skies are gorgeous after the rains and you captured a great picture from your vantage point.

you know, that neighborhood is not like it was 30 or 40 years ago.

i know several older folks from that area and El Sereno that refuse to move.

I grew up in the area. I also have an aunt & cousin in a house near my dad and another aunt in another part of El Sereno.

well...my hat's off to you.

there is a certain charm to that area. i think, geographically speaking, it's got a lot going for it. i look into the hilly, el sereno neighborhoods to the north and south of huntington drive and i can imagine simpler, bygone days.

but you know, demographically, things have changed quite a bit.

there has been some upsurge in home improvements in that area, but now the housing market is cooling off and i doubt that el sereno will ever see a resurgence to its glory-days.

Ahhh... City Hall... just a block away...

Ahhh... Couty jail... I don't know what those buildings were to the left of the MTA building. I just checked Google Maps... I always thought the buildings at Alameda & Temple were the Twin Towers. Live and learn...

Yes, L.A. can have some wonderful views on these clear days. From my house I have a view of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains which are wonderful when it snows there.

i wanted to like the sim city pc game, as i've never like video games in general. but even that could not hold my interest. i tried it out for the first and only time in 2000. afraid i did not get much beyond simply installing it.
Looks good ... the first one looks like something out of one of the
Sim City PC games ... LOL :-)

so i guess that LA is not such a great city. here's a muddled view of the majestic LA River:

I do get nostalgic when I visit my aunt as she lives across the street from the house where I lived my 1st 10 years. It's off of Eastern Ave. and the buildings are basically the same, though some are shuttered (like the Post Office). Early last year I needed to xerox some papers for my aunt and I went to the El Sereno branch library and they told me that they going to be moving. Now the old building stands empty. sigh... I gather that you know the area well. I graduated from Wilson in the early 70's.

Yes the demographics have changed, but I saw it change growing up... natural progression in LA. But I think because there aren't a lot of apartments in the area it is very stable, family-wise, and the housing market has brought in a mix of people into parts of the area.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the jail at Alameda/Temple. It's funny how one can live in an area for 40... 50 years... and not know a lot of what's in one's own city.

And... getting back to the topic at hand. Nice B&W photo, though I don't know the look of Sim City. I probably would have photoshopped the roof protrusions. Ahhh... the nostalgia of my old black and white days... :)
