Ok - I've read (and written) all the forums here bemoaning what the G7 does not offer.

Put basically, is the G7 a better over-all camera than any other NON-dslrs?

Commence conversating :)

Isn't posting 5 threads on the same topic akin to bumping a thread with no new content?

You need to be more specific; better in what way? "Over-all" is too vague. What's important to you is important. If you say better shutter lag with flash, or better ergonomics or better wide angle, it's definitely NO. It suffers in these characteristics but could be better in other ways.

A camera is a tool. Get what you like and what you can afford. Hopefully, the tool you decide to go with will give you immense enjoyment using it. That's the best!

The G7 is a very good overall camera, but there are others that beat it in certain ways:
  • the Fuji F30 does high ISO better.
  • the Sony R1 does wide angle better, and arguably has a better overall lens.

G7 is often chosen by photographers with experience. Usually they have DSLR as so called first camera many of them are professionals and from their point of view G7 is very good camera. But nowadays is very hard to chose the best camera, leading producers are making really good cameras and differences aren't so big, so the choice is an individual matter.
To me G7 is the best :).

More often by consumers or people interested in taking photos. I wouldn't even call most people here as photographers, me included.

At the moment it seems that G7 is one of the best P&S cameras. But there are cameras like Sony R1, Fuji cameras, A640(cheaper than G7 with less features), Pro1, the old G-series and so on, there are many. With the price of G7 you could get a dlsr, with the accessories many people here have bought you could get a decent lens. No P&S can get the results of an dslr. This whole topic isn't that great. No talk about price, IQ or features. If image quality is considered there are better cameras out there and one of those will be DP1. DP1 might be the first camera that could get dslr lie results but it is too limited to be the "best" P&S in my opinion.

No... but the "best" doesn't exists... not yet.

So how said "mamallama", you have to watch what is important for you, if 10 MPIX is absolutely needed, then it's one of bests... if the ISO then FUJI F30 is better, if image quality & maximal zoom, maybe S3IS is better solution...

So the perfect camera doesn't exists, except G5 :-)

The G7 is pretty good in videos, tested it, it's not bad at all, but today some others offer equal or better image quality or size in video mode...

THE PERFECTION DOESN'T EXISTS :-(

From what I've seen, the G7 is better indoor than the S3IS without post-processing...so it might be a little more DSLR-like

No, it isn't because: It doesn't have a wide angle lens like the LX2, it doesn't have high ISO performance like the F30, it doesn't have RAW capability like the E900, it doesn't have a grip like the S9000, etc etc etc. Unfortunately no manufacturer has put together a complete set of features in one camera yet.

Ok -- it seems like f30 is the closest match to g7. Can the g7 shoot indoor with low light like the f30 can? Does the 10 MP count (albeit smaller sensor) make the pictures have more detail? I won't post a new thread, I promise ... ;0

Sorry, but the best, including SLR, is A710IS. Only way to make me change my mind is to send me "the camera" you think is best, I'll try it out and if you are right I will say so. ;)

IS the best non-SLR...or is it an SLR????

I wonder........................

you have contracted a severe case of G7itis. I think you just need to go buy one. I wont bite you. Learn to use it and like it, and forget about what it does or doesnt do compared to every other camera on the planet. Worst case senerio is you hate it, and cant be happy taking a single picture. Then throw it away, or sell it, or give it to somebody you dont know, and you'll make a new best friend
