OT: From Freelance to PJ?

I've haven't used a flash bracket in many years. Usually I'm bouncing the flash or setting them up off camera and fire them with the ST-E2. For the few ocassions I can't set up lights off camera and have nothing to bounce them off of, then I end up holding the camera in one hand and the flash in the other at arms length.

That's it.
Hi All,

I've been a freelance photog for three years now. In that time I
have done a fair amount of work for the local paper and have
apparently gained their respect as a potential photo journalist.
Now it's happened - a part time PJ position has opened up at the
paper and they have offered it to me! The logistics of my taking
this position are tricky due to existing commitments, but hopefully
they can be worked out. If so, I will be working as a photo
journalist by Xmas!

Mostly I'm writing this because I want to share the news with
people who can appreciate what this means to a photographer who has
always wanted to be involved with journalism. But also, I was
hoping to get some input as to what things I would need to have in
my bag in order to effectively and professionally do my job.

I currently shoot with the 20D, although I am in the process of
getting a 1DmkIIN (April). I know I'll need an f/2.8 zoom and a
new camera bag for the IIN. What else might I need (my gear is
listed in my profile)? Your input is greatly appreciated.

You have a good point, but I can really use the 1DII. If anything
I will eventually upgrade to another 1DII. Thanks, Excal. :-)
Don't think you will have a problem.

Got my 1DIIN less than a week ago and used it this weekend along with my 5D for a friends formal birthday party.

Had the 24-70 on 1DIIN and 70-200 2.8IS on 5D mostly. Except for group shots I put the 24-70 on the 5D so that I could get a little wider and get the extra resolution in case the friend wanted to print anything large.

This was my first ever 1 Series camera, so I am hardly an expert when it comes to this camera but I did not have any significant problems.

The only thing I had probems with was the way the 5D makes you go through the menues is a little different than on 5D or 30D. Seems to have been easier on 5D and 30D, but this didn't affect the shooting at all.

One thing that I like about the 1 Series camera is the user interface much easier to change shooting modes, exposure, and ISO, AF etc. as I can do it without taking my eyes off of the VF.

I am sure that you won't have any problems. As you are experienced enough to adjust.

Actually it kind of feels weird to be giving you "advice" as I concider you to be the better photographer.

I also have the 20d which I use the most with the canon 24-70 2.8 lense.

I do also own the 1DMKII, great camera but do not have a flash. So you will need one for it.

On both cameras I use the Canon Speedlite 580ex Flash with Omni-Bounce and Canon Compact Battery Pack CP-E3 for 580EX. It is a little moremoney but very well spend.

no problem.

stories like this go largely unnoticed while some in the international community fail to give the United States a break.

Wow, Jay, that's awfully nice of you to say. I don't think of it in terms of better or worse. I think of it this way: You have something to teach me and I am grateful for that. Thank you. I am very blessed to be able to work at what I like to do and am also blessed to have other photographers with experience (like you) to help guide me. I hope I can return return the favor sometime.

PS - Do you have a site of your work? I'd like to see it :-)

but it's a 420ex w/omnibounce. I'll be picking up a 580ex as well w/omnibounce and off camera cord.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Eddie.

You already have I have always enjoyed your work. Especially your macro and flora work.

I have good technical knowledge of camera and understand most photographic concepts and techniques, except pixel density and circle of confusion, dont' think I will ever understand those.
PS - Do you have a site of your work? I'd like to see it :-)
I do have 2 sites but most of my shots on my main site are personal stuff that I prefer not to show. I don't mind showing pictures of my family as much but I don't like to show pictures of friends and extended family.

My public site is currently Pbase but it takes too long to upload photographs as I can tell you can only upload 1 or 2 pictures at a time. For me anyways I find it hard to navigate.

So haven't finish posting my pictures there. Kind of busy at work this time of year so plan to do it at the first of the year.

anyways just added the link to my profile while I'm at it.

I had the 420, and gave it to my father with the 300d

the 580 is a great flash, you will have fun.

When you get the 1dMK2 you will have fun, but you will need to read a lot since it has so many option and funtions on it.
