I went to the state building to conduct some unrelated business but when I got there, there were media folks everywhere . . .

I found out that they were conducting the Mike Tyson hearing to see if he is fit to fight in Nevada. While walking around the area I saw this poor guy . . .

a sign of bad luck if you're the superstitious type. The hearing was almost over so we waited outside in the blustery cold and checked out our equipment . . .

Then Mike and his entourage came out and he was quickly engulfed. He had a rather silent demeanor but his bodyguards let you know to make way . . .

The rest of the pictures are at http://www.fototime.com/inv/5C1BBDAA11944B4 if you are interested and navigate as instructed below. E10+WCON+FL40 no problem, what do you think? I know that the gear seems heavy and I've even contemplated getting a carry everywhere cam but I think I am over that for some time now.

Nice shots. I think he may have to get rid of that stretch Mercedes soon since he lost his boxing license.

Looks like you were at the right place at the right time.

Hi Les,

Very timely work. Nice job. And thanks for sharing. Looks like Mike's chances of fighting in Vegas are about as lively as that pigeon.

Best wishes,

David

Great stuff! looks like you played all the right angles :)

Doc,

Thanks for the compliment. Good timing and good equipment is all that's needed. I see that you have your own website, one of these days I hope to have my own.
LesDMess
Great shots Les! Once again it is proven that Les is more!!!

Tommy,

Thanks for the compliment. Sorry, but at 1024X768 you can barely make out the Rolls Royce hood ornament. Chances are they will hold the fight at the Madison Square garden, and at a $100M payday, he will probably add to it rather then get rid off.
Yeah, there are all sorts of reasons to always take the camera with you.

DF,

Thanks for the compliment as I did approach it as if I was doing it as a profession but I made sure to give the folks who are working room to operate. Yeah I thought that pigeons misfortune was a bad luck sign for him in Nevada but it seems other states are already bidding to host the fight.

Brian,

Thanks for the compliment. I guess by that you mean that I used to light as best as I could while trying to maintain good composition of the subject? Still learning but most importantly still having fun! ;-)

Bill,

Thanks for the compliment. LOL You'd think that folks would be using those extra long lenses just to get some distance but as you can see they're right up in his mug! Go figure? His demeanor was rather subdued for just being voted down, guess he figures there are a few other options - all equally huge paydays.

Nice job Les!
Good thing you didn't resemble the last reporter he had...words...with.

I've noticed that it seems as though the flash bounce of choice is the Stofen. I see all the photographers at official news conferences using those. I've yet to see a Lumiquest Ultra bounce, like I bought, on any camera. Looks like the Stofen is 'easy on, easy off'.
Did you use bare flash on the Fl-40? Looks good.
Don

Don,

Thanks for the compliment! Yeah that's a good thing as I am sure that couldn't have been any fun! I use the Lumiquest and I just flip the velcro off of the top and the diffuser is there for the next shot - it's better IMO. However, in this case I did not use any diffuser.

Les,

I've always been embarrassed to ask just how the Ultra Biunce really goes on. Didn't really understand the idea of the little flap.
Don

I should have looked at the larger shot. I never made it past the one in the view frame (6?? x 4??).

Les,

Great job. Fine examples of photojournalism with the E-10. Besides the weight any other issues with the camera in that setting or use?--Thanks.Cleave

Cleave,

Thanks for the compliment. I didn't run into any problems. Weight? Did you see the equipment those folks were using . . . multiplied by at least 2 for the cameras they used. And what's with all those big lenses if their going right into his mug? Maybe a sturdy monopod and a an LCD screen attached to the video out (like the Oly Eyetrek) for those overhead of the crowd shots (don't forget to close the viewfinder). Judging from all the mirror slapping sounds, these folks would porbably be better off with a video camera so they can get more frames in! I guess the best advice is know the subject and the environment so that you can be at the right spot. Fire off and review some test shots as always, don't have auto preview on so that shot tot shot times is minimized and know how to change your settings for optimal exposure without taking your eyes off of the viewfinder - very easy to do with the E10. You just have to be fast as these people were all over him after he exited the building, guess I was quick enough to fire of some clean shots before they blocked him off.

LesDMess,

Wooohoo! At least the E-10 is a heavy weight of its own in case you got wacked by Tyson the Tempermental Tyrant. :)

I watched the hearing yesterday. All I can say is, Thank God some people had the guts to refuse this freak to fight, eventhough the money would have been nice to have for the city. He's got serious problems. And I'm glad I won't be around him when I'm in Vegas. Of course if I do come across him, I'll shoot him....with my E-10. And then run like hell.

I hear Afghanistan will be hosting the next fight for Tyson. I think he and the limp-wristed Bin Laden would be a fair fight. I'd pay to see that.

Jason,

i can certainly understand the animosity towards him but I can emphatize with his plight coming from an orphanage to making millions by beating somebody senseless - too much money without the prerequisite lifeskills to go with it. Just think if you didn't have the lifeskills and made that kind of money . . . you'd probably be buying a D1X body for every Nikon lens you owned! Yeah I'd pay to see Tyson and Bin Laden, in a caged match!

Tyson being from Brooklyn certainly wouldn't mind a match with Bin.
Talk about taking a bite out of crime. I'd also pay to see that dinner.
