The lens is quite nice though the sensor could use a little improvement. I will agree the lens was worth the price of the camera

...is one of the finest Leica lenses. That lens was what prompted me to buy an LC1. The images from it are outstanding...and after all, it's excellence of the final image that we're after. What also helps, I think, is that Panny/Leica made the sensor slightly larger at 2/3 and used fewer MP. This allows the photosites to be larger and less prone to overload, reducing noise and increasing dynamic range. This combination is what allows the Summicron lens to really shine.
Just my own feelings, but imho, borne out in the final images.

Enjoy your new LC1...it's a gem.

The LC1 is a very nice camera. I have one, but I think I may have a problem with mine. I have some funny color cast on all of my images as if I'm unable to get the correct white balance.

I'm going to play with it tonight if I get a chance.

'This is a picture I did not take of a tall, greying man with crooked teeth whom I've encountered three times while photographing downtown, and each time, he's approached me quickly from the front, with a long stride, and each time he's leaned toward me and said the exact same thing 'Old One's Are Better' while palming his ancient brass Leica, opening his hand enough to show me what's there, but not enough really showing-off!' Hi Joe,
I always enjoy your street photography.

Re your peculiar color shift...do you think the white balance adjust sub menu under white balance may be shifted one way or the other? It took me a while to figure out how to get into that particular sub menu. One must first go to white balance and take it out of auto, say to sunny, then the white balance adjust menu becomes active.

Of course you probably knew that already...didn't intend to insult you, rather just a suggestion.

Hello Angus!

I'm not sure exactly what it is. I checked the White Balance fine tuning last night and that was set dead in the middle.

I noticed the funny colors a few weeks ago when I let my girlfriend borrow my camera. I would blame her but I noticed it 3 minutes after I handed it to her so I'm sure she didn't do anything to it.

The only thing it may have been was she did not use the lens hood outdoors, and I did take off the filter. I need to test it in the daylight with the lens hood on it.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

David where did you get your
LC1 for 800? retailing at around 1400. thks

I found mine on eBay for $878 from a large Japanese camera store...matsuiyastore. I'm glad to share this info to help you find one. Who knows, they might have more. Mine came with all the original equipment and really was like new.
Wish you good luck in your search. It is definitely worth the effort.
Best,

I have read various posts from users going back to 2004 who needed to have the sensor replaced. It is rare but real.

A post within the last week on the pana forum suggests that pana have finally acknowledged the problem and admitted that they, too, are victims of the faulty sony sensor problem which was heavily publicised at, I think, the beginning of 2006.

It is a free replacement, even outside warranty.. Not sure how you go about it, though.

Try searching "LC1 sensor fault" or "LC1 sensor problem"

Let us know what happens. :-)

The fine lens aside,

On the D2/LC1 sensor problems, I've only seen reported that Panasonic Japan are commited to replace Japan sold LC1 sensors outside original warranty. I haven't seen anything regarding LC1 sold outside Japan; if anyone has, I'd be interested to read up on that.

Leica recently made a (apparently loose ended, strangely) statement on their part regarding free sensor replacement outside warranty:

pana forum since 2004.

The owners had them repaired, some with some effort...

Haven't seen any such reports from Leica owners, but then the forum hasn't been running very long, either.

Thanks for the info :-)

D2's have been stellar image machines. You may have to do some digging to get a real sense of their cult-like following. The camera produces great images, is well balanced, and handles like a traditional camera. Hard to not use it.

Go to the Leica Forum to catch up on the sensor issues which seem to have come front and center lately. FWIW, Leica is standing behind the D2 even if out of warranty.

I haven't received it yet, but its good to know there is some support if a sensor should fail.

The D2 imaging does appear to be exceptional for the era, and very good even now.

Anyway, its pretty well a unique format/style of camera...isn't it?

Well, if you know of anything other than luminous landscapes and is it photo.net or something like that, I like to read...
