Blown out whites on FF Canon

I am on my sixth digital camera, and my fourth SLR, first full
frame. Canon factory has my camera again for repair.

Let me just guess what the Canon repair tech had on the report
enclosed with your returned camera,
in summary: nothing to repair, camera works just fine.

What they wished they could have reported:
moron, stick to P&S cameras......

no offense......
Are you absolutely sure? Seems pretty offensive to me.

Nope, first isn't an excuse. Everyone was jumping off a cliff, so I did, too...
Honest, constructive criticism and negative, smug abuse are not the same thing.

If you can afford a 5D, you can afford an X-Rite color checker card. Get the standard card (about $60) or recommended is the digital card for $250.

You can get a good idea of how your exposure meter is working by setting up on a tripod and zeroing out the exposure meter on manual, then hold the color checker up in front of the camera (under the same lighting) and fire the shutter. Since it covers full black to full white and with a good range of color (digital version can even help you check your color gamut) you can look at the resulting image to see what the RGB numbers are.

If you don't use a tool like this, you're just guessing.

no constructive criticism needed, I think the other replies pretty much summed it up here.
It is obvious the guy has more money than his photographic skills and knowledge.

We see this time and time again on this forum and others like it now that DSLR's are more prevalent.

Personally I don't know why Canon would put "Auto" mode on this type of camera and it
even puzzles me more why someone would use it on a $2000+ camera.
Excuse me, he has a $8000 outfit.

I'm glad there is a GREEN mode on the 5D... that way my wife is able to get (some) pictures of me and the kids. -But she's not complaining about blown out whites.

Fifth, take up another activity. Knitting, kite flying, pimple
popping, head standing, sea kayaking, grave robbing, hang gliding,
and midget tossing are all popular activities for people of various
abilities and aptitudes.
Peter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-) I'm on the ground... :-)
I'd like to apologize for the fifth suggestion. It was in very poor
taste, and I promise to never do it again.
promised?

no, no, no!
My wife doesn't touch my 5D (no offense honey).
That is why I bought her a nice P&S, and she is happy with that.

Constructive criticism is always warranted - abuse of strangers isn't. And as you say, it’s all been said already.

Auto? Well, it ads versatility, and allows you to grab a shot you'd have missed when starting up, and you don't have time to compose the shot of your dreams. Doesn't always get it right, but then it doesn't always get it wrong. Does mean that you get two bites of the cherry – auto for a grab shot, then, if you still have time, compose. But you get your shot. Use auto. all the time? No. But if someone has $8000 to burn, good luck to them if it makes them happy.

This Forum? Isn't it to enhance your knowledge? Hope so!
