Aperture running on both Laptop & Desktop, 2 licenses?

Hi All,

Adobe lets me run two copies of Photoshop on my laptop and desktop (they'll even run simultaneously, not that that's commonly practical). I've left Aperture running on my laptop (in the midst of something, don't want to re-find my spot) and when I tried to start it on the desktop, no go. I've had to quit Aperture on the laptop in order to start it on the desktop (the laptop was being used to sort photos in an existing project, and I'm just about to start shooting tethered to the desktop and wanted Aperture to put on another hat as a proofing tool).

Bummer of a policy that (yeah, I know I can take the laptop off the network, that's not the point :-)

Did I miss something during the install that would allow me to run Aperture on both the desktop and laptop? Or would that require two licenses? (not practical, I'll deal with the inconvenience).

I just bumped into the same thing. I own other software that detects if it's running elsewhere on the network so this time I understood. Yes, one running copy at a time. :)

It is quite normal that you are allowed to install a copy of the software on both a laptop as well as a desktop, but you are not allowed to run them simultaniously . That also applies to Photoshop AFAIK, even if Adobe didn't built-in a check whether you violate that part of the licence.

Oh well, so much for new policies of enlightenment on the part of software developers! :-)

Hi Johan,

Yeah, I know, I was just grumping, really. I was hoping for a new policy of enlightened usage.

I can't be that atypical in that I sit at my desk with two machines running and doing similar things. I can see a shrinkwrap license being concerned with multiple copies running on different machines used by different people (who could and should buy a copy each), but one person using the software simultaneously on multiple machines could be considered a single installation (especially as what I'm doing on each machine is well within the capabilities of Aperture, it's just that a single machine doesn't have the horsepower to multitask at this level).

It makes me wonder, and this is way OT, if the groups who have strung together multiple machines in an array to make a super-computer have to buy multiple licenses of whatever software they're running, one for each box in the array.

Too advanced a notion! :-)

Could be worse. Some software has a per processor license so if you go to dual or quad processor setup it gets seriously expensive.

You know what, it is exactly a pain. You can only run APERTURE on one machine at a time.

I use CAPTURE ONE PRO, you can you it with 1 license copy on two machines and running at the same time. And you know what, compare to APERTURE, CAPTURE ONE PRO flies!!!

That's why I sold my copy for £100.00, bought it for £210.00 - really hurt - too slow nobody wants it!!!

The big shot photographers advertising for APPLE is somekind of CON. Don't get me wrong, I love APPLE (user since APPLE ERA and NO WINDOW user), but APERTURE s* ks inthat it really is a system for big shot photographers who can afford at least one assistant and digital assistant!!!

Ignore Wing Ding, he works for Capture One.
