Why no built in hoods?

How come canon doesn't have built in slide out hoods on more of its lens? I have the 300 f4 L and the 200 f2.8 L Mk I and both have these slide out hoods - This means I never forget them, they don't take up extra space in the bag (the hoods reversed take up too much width wise) and in general are just very convinient.

I would love it if the 24-105 f4 L, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4 etc. had slide out hoods. I know canon gets 25-45 for the hoods but I would pay the extra price for the lens if they had them, and I think a lot of other people wouldn't mind either - it would just be a convinience thing.

Take a close look at the hoods for the 300/4 and 200/2.8. Then take a look at the hoods for your other lenses. Notice anything? Right... they are like a coffee can and not much larger than the lens barrel. This means they can be made to slide out. Slide-out hoods on anything besides super-telephotos would be nearly impossible. How would you slide out a large petal-shaped hood?

Hoods are the way they are because opitcally that's the shape they need to be.

Ok, that was my thinking also - but I just bought a Leica R6 and a 50mm f2 lens to go wiht it - and guess what - it has a slide out hood. So does the Leica R 35 f2 and Leica R 90mm f2.8 so at the very least, the 35, 50, 85 lens could have slide outs no?.

I imagine that it is hard to make the best-fit hood slide out from the lens unless you are in the telephoto range, and even then it might not be the absolute best. Leica has always tried to make hoods convenient, though. Other manufacturers must not think hoods are as important. A lot of Leica's reflex lenses can have slide-out hoods because they have large barrels, but even the old M lenses had clip-on hoods that reversed on the lens for storage. At least my 50 f/2 and my 90 f2.8 do.

and even some of the non L's. I don't think they could include hoods on low priced consumer lenses and keep the price down. As it is the prices are much higher than third party lenses.

I Would Move one step further and say why not include a hood at no
extra charge ,say like a incentive to buy LOL They Throw in a bag
which I bet half the people dont even use, I know my EF 70 200
2.8L IS bag is collecting dust with all the other ones. (:-)-+
I agree completely. They should include hoods with all the lenses and get rid of those goofy bags. Worse, I have over $1000 worth of Canon super telephoto lens trunks in the attic that will never see the light of day unless I sell the lens or ship it back for repair.

When you figure the "cost" of those plastic lens hoods it would not add much to the price of a lens.
