It's too easy to justify these prices on a supply & demand basis but in the meantime the wrong message is going out to existing & potential users. A better message would be....

'Sorry currently sold out to exceptional demand - please be patient we have stepped up production for this quality product '

Are you talking about the very lens that has not been available for about 6 montyhs and has only been redily avalable on store shelves for, what, 10 days?

high demand + limited supply = high prices.

Give it time. The same thing was being said about the now $750 a100

And $1800 was too expensive IMO since it is NOT STABILIZED and compete with the NON STABILZED versions of the Canon/Nikon product.

How much time does Sony have? The honeymoon for the A100 is over. It ended when the D80/400D were released.

Who is setting the price? Can retailers sell it for more than MSRP or are they limited to MSRP? Will the price to retailers drop as the street price drops? Who is making all the money from this lens?

It's my guess that both Sony & the retailers are making extra money on these prices & too some extent that is understandable but they need to realise that they are in this business for the long term & that short term profits are OK but that they may eventually lose goodwill by such practises. Profit margins can be assessed by comparing prices between high street retailers & INTERNET suppliers.

Jessops have recognised that modern wise buyers are capable of spotting a good deal & their policy of trying to match Internet prices is a sign of this & they deserve support for this new policy despite the fact that some individual shops seems to have not fully understood the principles involved.

People are not as stupid as some think that they are & eventually chickens come home to roost ! Long term loyalty has to earned & repeat sales are encouraged by treating the consumer in a fair way.

Sony knows they have us by the huevos! Especially when you look around and few are still doing anything for the mount.

That is why I took a chance on the Vivitar Sries 1 70-210 2.8 lens that I have to now return. BTW it turns out that this lens was "new" but 10 years old!

I cant see, not based on anything other than conjectory, Sony dropping anything until long after a replacement for the 7D arrives or to help introduce the new camera. Now if they were really smart, they would and it would steal some of the used market on ebay. As nice as some of those lens are, I cant bring myself to spend $400 on a 20 year old lens that cannot be repaired. (100mm)

I'm stuck in the middle, as much as I would like a new 100mm and something in the range you mention I am not going to consider buying until I see a new replacement for the 7D. I imagine Sony is thinking that not many A100 users, at least the market they want, is willing to spend that kind of money.

I have always said, as long as my camera works, I'm OK. But if it breaks tomorrow, well then its off to one of the darksides where everything is plentyfull and update regularly.

Well said Digitalshooter! I too will keep shooting with my current gear. But as needs arise I will no longer hesitate to look at other offerings. hence my recent purchase of a Canon 30D and 400 5.6 USM L lens. I got tired of working around the limitations of my 7D and went out and got the equipment I needed to shoot birds in flight with a high quota of keepers. It is refreshing to be able to go online, make a purchase, and have the brand new equipment in your hands a day or two later. The inflated prices by Sony helped force my hand into the switch.

Makes no sense to me...its like they think they're playing in the "Pro" space with those lens prices when the A100 is not quite up to "Pro" standards.

Give us some nice glass in a plastic bodied lens to save costs and save the "Pro" stuff for when they come out with a 7D replacement.

Well, Sony sets the MSRP and generally doesn't let 'authorized' retailers deviate much from that. Furthermore, there was that infamous interview a while back with a Sony exec who "justified" the high pricing of the SSM lenses by the demand shown by recent eBay activity; basically he said Sony will charge what they can get for them. If it works for them, great, and I'm not about to switch from my KM gear (in fact, I'm looking forward to reviews of the upcoming CZ16-80). But if I were looking to build a new system, I'd buy Canon or Nikon in a heartbeat because of the availability and pricing of the higher end lenses.

Dan,

I agree, Sony lens prices are predatory and unjustifiably high. Perhaps they think that we're all a bunch of gullible idiots?

The jokes on them....I will continue to happily use my KM 5D, KM 18-200, KM 50/1.4 and KM 18-70 kit lens.

The best thing for us to do is to keep our money in our pockets until they apologize profusely to their customer base in the form of deep discounts and fast friendly delivery.

It is a joke to target entry level DSLR w stupid lens price. They arent going to get Nikon's market with this. People will be reluctant to invest because the lens are just tooo expensiveeee

This is a good thread because i am sure that sony has people watching the digital photography forums.

If we get enough threads like this I am sure sony will react.
