What is the file # on a new camera?

When I turned on my brand new 1D Mark II N, the file number was/is 431.

I thought that rather strange for a brand new camera. I was expecting 0 or maybe 100.

Did I get a return?

Same thing happened to me (different #, of course) when I popped a previously used CF, which I did not reformat at the time, into my 5D. Also, I had a strange folder name, not what was listed in the manual.

I was puzzled and posted here and someone answered that it was probably the CF card. I reformatted the card, and then reset the numbering and Voila! I had the folder named in the manual and my file numbering started (at 101, I believe).

I bought a new card, but my Rebel was sitting right there and I popped it out instead of getting up to grab my scissors to open the new package.

It's at 100 with the new card.

Did you check the number with CanCount or look at the metadata on CS2?
