LBA, CBA, K10D and sack full of Limiteds

1. Congratulations on the "over the top" puchase of body and
lenses. You're gonna get a lot of forum members salivating...
That was my intention.
2. Most of the pictures are quite interesting, and quite
illustrative of what those "coke bottles" ({g}) can do...
Funny you should call them that.
3. I do have to say, however, that I did not care much for the
inclusion of that 43 Ltd image.
Sorry if you found it offensive. I could feel for this guy sticking his neck out (a bad habit of mine). The chicken rice was delicious, BTW. ;-)

When I replied the pics were not there yet..... I repleid to your
shopping spree. Like a woman with a credit card.....
You seriously think men are less dangerous with plastic???

But stop beating around the bush, Janneman - do you think the lenses warrant the hype and the outlay of funds?

Hi, Matt.

That would include me, by the way - {drool}.

That was prompted by a number of (sarcastic) current and recent threads about the "coke bottles" that some of the older Pentax gems can be, which were prompted mostly, i think, by someone who felt that the newest consumer zooms were better than old classics - I suspect that he/she might feel the same about quality primes, too. ;-)

My only Limited right now is the 77, which is fun to compare with my 85's. I used to have the 43, but no longer... I really would like the 31, though...

I'm sure that the chicken would have appreciated that... :-~

Take care...

It's a fine piece of glass.

Thank you everyone for you congratulations on my acquisitions and my photographic skills. I certainly am proud of the images, but I must admit that I have pulled a fast one on you - the equipment is not in all cases as listed.

For starters, I have not (yet) picked up my K10D - all images were shot with a lowly *ist DS. Some of these images were not shot with the limited lens listed, either.

I'm debating major camera equipment purchases over the holidays, and I was having a difficult time figuring out where to place my priorities - should I go for a K10D, or invest only in soon-to-be-discontinued FA-limiteds? Or go for flash equipment only? This thread has shown me that although some may have suspected, no one was brave enough to publicly acuse me of Limited forgery, although lenses with quite ordinary pedigrees were used here.

Anyone care to guess which ones, or what lens was actually used? Or do you simply wish to know the actually equipment right away?

Hey, Matt, didn't know you've got a full house on the LTDs, congrats! The photos are really nice, especially like the one w/ your wife, and she looks beautiful.

I know K10D reached Malaysia a couple of weeks back, don't know why Shriro still haven't got it here in SG yet :(

Thanks for sharing.

Already have the DA 40mm, guess that leaves me still shy of a full
deck. As petit as the 77 is though, I can't see why I would need
the 70 other than to complete a collection.

Matt
Hey, you've got a 43 and 40 too, why not just a 77, and 70 as well ;) Make it a real full house and you'd be done w/ LBA for a while :D

To me, I exchanged the 21 to a much wider 14 (which suits my needs better) ...
Great pictures.

Don't forget the DA 40 and DA 70 ;-)

I don't care how much they overlap, I want them all!

Hi Frank!
Hey, Matt, didn't know you've got a full house on the LTDs,
congrats! The photos are really nice, especially like the one w/
your wife, and she looks beautiful.
Thank you very much! Unfortunately (see earlier post), I don't actually have a limited full house. I just wanted to see if I could get away with pretending I do for a day. It seems as though I could. Which makes me wonder if I really even need more limiteds... or a K10D... :( :(

Matt, Good one!

Lemme guess: My fav pic (the dog) seems to be from something 50ish. Since the bokeh isnt smooth, it would very well be the kit. Also the insect doesnt feel like a macro though I dont have any experience. The last could be a 77 but it could be a 50/1.4 too. I cant see the octagonal rings from a 50 clearly from such a small jpeg but I am certain it must be a pentax lens with f/2 or better ..... The beach picture is too small to pixel peep and decide whether it was a DA 21 or the kit at 21.

So did you use the kit lens for some?

I did ask myself whether I could, with some more skill, get such pics from non limiteds but I thought novices like me wouldnt know of the subtle differences :)

And yes...we are all jealous of your lenses.
You wouldn't be so jealous if you knew what they actually were. Let's just say the true market value of the kit used to create these images is way south of the roughly 3000 US it would take to assemble the kit I claimed to use at the beginning of this thread.
Nice photos.
Thanks.

Matt

Hi debo,
Matt, Good one!
Thanks for being good-natured about it!
Lemme guess: My fav pic (the dog) seems to be from something 50ish.

It is the kit, but I really like the bokeh and think it's plenty smooth enough! I guess a true Limited might have looked somehow different, but better?

Also
the insect doesnt feel like a macro though I dont have any
experience.
Also right on. The kit lens just doesn't have the resolution at those magnifications to give the detail a true macro lens will. Here, a dedicated macro lens would have made a very obvious impact on image quality.

The last could be a 77 but it could be a 50/1.4 too.

Also spot on. This was the A 50mm 1.4 at 1.8, 1/40s handheld (who needs SR, I get an extra stop from just plain having steady hands!)
So did you use the kit lens for some?
yep...
I did ask myself whether I could, with some more skill, get such
pics from non limiteds but I thought novices like me wouldnt know
of the subtle differences :)
Well, you seem to be able to see the differences quite well. But I do think this thread fooled a few people - makes one wonder if the differences in image quality are worth that huge chunk of change, especially when my A 50mm 1.4 cost me 90 euros.

Matt

= kit @ 31mm
= kit @ 55mm
=kit @43mm
=kit @ 21mm

DFA 50mm Marco
=kit @ 55mm in close
= A 50mm 1.4 @ 1.8
So, the mysteries are revealed, I guess this wasn't as shocking for you as it was for me. My wife and I went to the island of Pangkor for the weekend. Since we were just going on a quick getaway, I didn't feel like lugging around all my lenses and gear, so I brought:

ist DS
18-55
polarization filter
mini-tripod
A 50 1.4
pentax remote

And that's it. We rented a motorcycle and I threw the DS with the kit around my neck and we rode off into the sunset so to speak. The versatility of this lens is truly amazing. The image quality is excellent for most uses. There are weaknesses at 18mm and some vignetting, but wow, a little PP and you can do almost anything with this gem. Possibly the most capable lens in my collection, by a landslide the biggest bang per ounce.

Matt

Thanks, Joe - this weekend trip has really made me reconsider my plans for buying new gear.
