I lost my NikonView disk that came with my CP990. Now, as far as I can tell, I cannot use my $1,000 camera anymore. Connecting it via USB to a Win2k/XP PC (I have both here) results in "please insert your NikonView disk" messages. Searching for drivers or software on the net has been fruitless, and I can't find Nikon's support site anymore, everything's been replaced by "go buy a CP995 now" banner ads.

Sorry to vent, I am a bit irked right now.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to get my CP990 to start working with a fresh Windows XP machine?

Have you considered spending $25.00 at Micro center for a ZIO USB PCcard reader? How valuable is your time? I have the 990 and NEVER used Nikon's software...ever; for my 900 and 950 as well. On the other hand if you feel it necessary to wrestle this to the ground I can't help you.

I don't feel I should have to go drive half an hour to buy more accessories when I've already spent $900 for the camera and about $400 on accessories. I'm not asking for anything beyond simply being able to get the images off my camera, which is painless for friends with cameras costing 1/4 as much as mine. Anything short of that is simply unacceptable.

I found and installed the latest NikonView from nikontechusa.com, version 4.3.1. The software starts up fine but when I turn on the camera XP wants a driver and I don't appear to have one. None appear to have shipped with NikonView and none are embedded in the camera. Oh, and XP ships with a CP950 driver but not the 990 driver. So, where can I find a CP990 driver?

Is anyone aware of a location where I can download the CP990 driver? That I think is all that I need.

I've been on hold with the Nikon 800 number for 1/2 hour (it said the queue was 10 minutes!) and hope they can point me in the right direction, but I think they are going to tell me to order another disc. This is very frustrating. Every other hardware device I've bought in the last ten years has drivers posted on the internet today. Does Nikon not do this, or are they posted someplace other than nikontechusa.com?

Try your luck on this. The first time I installed on Win98 had to remove even the C: drive folder link references to get it working. Don't give up yet! I don't use a card reader yet either. My CF pins are in pristine condition and never crash any CF card! (eL)

Hi,

Unfortunately, if you are going to stay with the NikonView software you'll need to contact the Nikon folks, most probably using their 800 number. As you have expected, they will probably have to order a new disk for you. There are portions of the NikonView software that are only available on the CD, so you'll be needing to get one.

Rich's suggestion may have seemed pretty blunt, but he was pointing you right direction... A USB CF Card Reader is tremendously more convenient, is much faster, and is not dependant on Nikon's or any other vendor's software. As you get further into digital photography, like most of the rest of us here, you'll probably recognize card readers as being one of the handiest things you could have gotten -- even if NikonView was working for you right now, a card reader would still be more valuable to you.

BTW, if driving some distance in order to get a card reader is a problem, mail order companies can get one to you very quickly, probably more quickly than Nikon can get their CD to you.

Don't feel like we're not sympathetic to you with this, but the card reader is really an important accessory that will open lots of other doors for you.

Best of luck with this.

Windows XP ?!!!

I am not sure whether XP came out first or your camera 990 came out first?

I bought a Sony's PDA and upgraded my PC to Windows XP and the original hot sync software no longer working. Initially, Sony just said their PDA's would have compatibilty problem with XP, period. I guess too many people complains, they then published an approximate date for an XP driver. I had to wait close to 3 months and checked with their board every week (day) before they finally put out an XP compatible driver.

I think your best bet is like others suggested, to get a CF reader and forget about the challenge either to Nikon or Microsoft. You will not regrate it. Otherwise, you will waste lot more time and wear out your sanity.

Been there.

As already suggested by people who knows the Card reader is 100 times better than the Nikon software, have only had problems since i installed the 4.3.1
Somehow it is blocking for my internet connection.

The software i got with my 950 was lousy too, had to disable all but 3 programs from the msconfig startup to get my pc to work..
Forget about Nikons software it s....

I wish you had one of my extra CF card readers. They came free, packaged with Lexar cards for a while and maybe still do. The down side is that they don't seem to be able to read non-Lexar cards. Since the non-Lexars are selling for "cheap" now, I bought a SanDisk reader (~$50) to read my Viking card (~$130 for 256 MG). BTW, I've never tried to load directly from either of my 950s to the PC.

Something else that seems to prevail in this forum is that best results are obtained by reformatting the card in the camera after downloading images into a PC.

Hello
just go there again :p
http://www.nikontech-usa.com/View431CPX.htm

and read the last part of the page :) they forgot to place the driver for the 990 inside the package, so you can download it separately :)

hope it helped :P--G-R.Lemon

Sorry to say this but: Get a card reader. I have a 990 and when I upgraded to Windows XP, I never was able to get the camera to communicate with the computer. I tried a bunch of different things. Finally, I got a cheap Sandisk Imagemate card reader. I found it for 22 bucks. It is sooooooo much faster and convenient than reading from the camera anyway. Nikon's software has always left me feeling unsatisfied. No comments on that.

I never installeld the Nikon software. I just plug the USB cable into the camera and into the computer (running Win XP) and the computer recognizes the camera as a new drive. The Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard uploads the images.

Don, it seems like constantly taking the CF card in out out of the camera and in and out of a card reader would increase chances of damaging pins. Why not just leave the card in the camera and plug the USB cable into the camera and computer. No muss, no fuss

I do the same as Mark Wolin. The software is not of much use to me. My camera serves as a card reader for me. I can drag and drop files for my iPaq to my card as it resides in my camera, then pull the card and pop it in my Pocket PC. Music, images, maps, etc...

Just plug it in and go.
