I have been using an UZI for years but have grown weary of the size and the lugging around of the lenses that I've accumulated. Why be digital if you're carrying around the same size and weight bag as my old Nikon 35mm? I'm definately not a professional so why look like one.

After spending a lot of time researching P & S cameras of various brands, I boiled it down to the Canon 700IS and 800IS. No one around here carried the 700IS anymore, so I was considering an on-line purchase. Then I see an Office Depot ad for 20% off the $399.00 price for the 800IS. I go into Best Buy and not only do they price match but they are also willing to honor a 12% off coupon they sent me for being a Rewards Club member. Net price for the 800IS was $281.59. So much for an offer that I couldn't refuse! Add to that SanDisk 1GB Ultra II cards for $29 (Staples price match) and I'm set.

I kind of preferred the extra zoom but I can see the utility of the wide angle so I'm content.

I look forward to being a part of this forum and learning from all of you.

Is there a thread or some link on the site explaining how to attach photos?

I bought the SD800. It is a nice camera.

I also bought Panasonic FX50 for my son. It is very similar to the SD800. It has a bigger (3") display.

I am looking for a carrying case for the Canon SD800.

The recommanded Canon SC-55 is too small.

I think the only way that embedding photos work is if they're on pbase.com. You then post the link to the photo and add ".jpg" at the end of the link, and it will appear automatically. If the photo is on another web site (or if it's pbase but you didn't add ".jpg") the reader has to click on the link.

The price was on the back page of their ad circular in the local newspaper. You can probably get the ad in the store but tomorrow is the last day unless they renew the sale.

http://www.pbase.com is a photo hosting/sharing site. For a fee (US$23 for 400MB of storage per year) they will store your photos. It's the most popular such site, and they have an arrangement with dpreview that allows the direct embedding of photos on pbase as I described. There are other photo hosting/sharing sites, some of them free, but they don't allow the direct embedding.

Please, could you explian in greater detail. What is pbase.com??
for a start,

Much appreciated.

You can post images that are hosted on ANY photo service, not only pbase. There are MANY others, such as smugmug, flickr, yahoo, etc., and the amount of space and fees vary - some are even free. I prefer smugmug, which is $35/year, is fully customizable, including the name of the URL, and has no limits on uploads. Basically, once your image(s) are hosted on the service you've chosen, you can just paste the link into any message here in dpreview. You might even have free space available with the ISP you use, and you can store your photos there. I have no restrictions on posting images stored on my ISP's space or smugmug to any of the dpreview forums.

Yes, but can you embed the image in the forum message, i.e., can you make it appear without the reader having to click on a link? My understanding is that only pbase allows that.

Thanks so much for the heads up on Office Depot 20% discount. I already had purchased the SD 800IS for $350 but this other deal got me an additional $30 credit from my local camera store. Although not as good a deal as you got with your Best Buy loyalty discount, getting this camera for $320 still seems like a good deal. Happy Holidays!

All you've got to do is cut and paste the address of the specific photo. I think you can put a semi-colon at the end, if you just want the link to show, and if you post the address of a gallery, only the link will show. I had a pbase account up until maybe 1.5 years ago, but at the time, they seemed to have some issues with the service not being accessible all the time - perhaps due to high traffic? I switched to smugmug, have been very happy with their service, and it's also great to not have any storage limit.

I also had the coupon. I got a copy of the Office Depot ad from the local Office Depot store.
$282, plus $20 sales tax in my case, was just too good to pass up.
Again, MAK, thanks for posting this deal.

So, I searched for the topic and still am not sure I have this correct. I have a website, naturally with photos on it. If I want a particular photo to show in this forum without someone having to click on a link, do I put the URL where the photo resides, followed by a semi colon? Or, do I put the webpage? Or, do I have to create a whole new page with just one photo on it? I tried this several times already and only the URL link works, but you still have to click on the link.

Here's try number 3
