If you don't have legacy lenses, don't bother

Yes, in fact just send them to me, I'll properly dispose of them! ;)

What, no comment on the test shots of my cool old $52 135/1.8?

How about the very last shot, the 100% crop of the corner , wide open ? How much better would you guess the $1,500 135/1.8 Nikon is, wide open, at the corners?

Certainly not enough better to make me regret buying the old $52 lens.

BTW, I don't recall exactly how long I monitored eBay for a super-fast 135 I could afford, but I think it was close to a year.

Greg
Well, I did read your post and do think the same ripoff prices
exist in pawn shops and ebay and KEH. I just don't find much of
anything of value in Pawn shops. There is good stuff on ebay and
KEH, but current prices for used Pentax lenses is through the roof.

I agree on the 50mm 2.0. I tried two of them and found both of them
pretty much unusable. They are lovely little machined jewels with
very nice smooth focusing rings, but, like you say are very soft.

I'm sorry, I hadn't taken a look at the test shots. Yes, it looks fine. As for soft corners, that is a product of wide lenses for the most part. I think most any good 135 would be fine in the corners. Interesting adapting to the *istD. You must be an engineer sort.

I'm a beginner, and I'm sure there are a lot of reasons why my test is not perfect. You'll noticed that the second one (manual lens) focussed a bit more in front even though I used the auto focus to help me, but still with my little knowledge of photography, I think that lens is better quality than the kit zoom.

This was done with a tripod, I stopped the M lens down to what the kit could do, same speed etc... I was as carrefull as possible as not to move the camera while changing the lens.

Make sure you zoom in if your browser scale the images.

First, with the 18-50mm kit lens:

Now, with an SMC 50mm f/1.4

He must have updated it. He used to have 6.

Cosmicar is Pentax. It is their CCTV brand and they rebadged some stuff under that label in 1987.

I have SMC M-50mm f/2.0 manual prime and it's as sharp or sharper lens than the kit lens. Perfect colors, great bokeh and nice shallow depth of field at low aperture. Definitely a fine lens if you have time to compose the shot.

I also have a generic JC Penney 135mm f/2.8 that is also very sharp with nice colors, but I almost never use it. I just don't shoot anything or anyone that's this far. Still, for outdoor shots it might come useful. I'll definitely use it if I will shoot some sports. 135mm f/2.8 is definitely fast enough though I might have to move up a bit closer to action.

I have a Pentax SMC M 50mm 1.7 lens. Is this lens any good and worth keeping? I see a lot on the F 50mm 1.4 and 1.7. Also, anyone know if a Vivitar 135 mm 2.8 (also about 25 years old) is any good? Holdovers from a K1000. thanks. Thinking of buying the K10D.

You can't get wrong considering the low cost of these lenses, I just bought a Pentax-M SMC 50mm f/1,7 and it delivers a lot (left over from a closed photo shop for less than 65 bucks) also got a Pentax-M SMC 135mm f/3,5.
Good luck

Has anyone tried the 50mm f2.0 as a portraiture lens? I mean, 85mm soft focus are popular for portraiture on full frame so 50mm soft focus should be good on the cropped sensor. Or is it not the same kind of softness?

I visited one pawn shop and had no luck at all. I suspect eBay has made separating the wheat from the chaff even easier for savvy pawn shop operators.

I think I paid $20, with shipping, for mine. It's a great little lens. If only it was AF I'd really be happy. I find myself using the guides on the lens a lot for my low-light stuff. 8^/

Is there any resource that divides the older out of production Pentax lenses into 'gems', 'average', and 'duds', so that someone shopping for older versions knows which ones to bother with?
-Chris

Your hypothesis is not quite correct about "legacy" lenses. The M100mm F2.8 I had was every bit as good as any of my Pentax zoom lenses I've owned (image quality, color rendition, focsing, etc.).

Blanket statements=not enough thinking before hitting the ENTER key.

Do a search under SPLOSDB.pdf

or Stan's comments page.
Probably under one of my links below there is a link.

Would you buy a '68 Camaro today?
YES!!!!!!!!! Although I'd go rather a '69... oddly enough you named one of the cars I keep telling myself I must have have someday(another being a '90s Viper GTS, hmm I'm going to need a good career).
