I took the plunge. I just ordered a new Coolpix 995 from Staples online (at a local store). It was a price match with another low price (online). The customer service rep at the store was very friendly. I had no problems with the match and was out the door in no time. So with the rebate, I will be getting it for around $550 to my door.

Couldn't justify the cost of a CP5K, or even going with my original thoughts of a G2. So, no more sleepless nights and beating my head against the wall. I just took the leap...

Thanks to all for the great reviews and advice (except weeding through the flames and chest thumping). Looking forward to future posts on the thrills of learning my new toy...and justifying the many reasons for needing this baby...to my wife.

You could have bought a 5000 for $704.99. Oh well, as long as you are happy with your purchase, that is all it matters.

The web site would be: http://amphotoworld.com/

I do not know how reputable they are, but if I were you, I would buy it from a shop in your hometown, and put it on an American Express card and do a price match. You get the best of both world... Good luck.

Would AmEx always do a price match regardless of who and what they are matching with? (Would they match bait and switch type of pricing or gray marketing products?)

amphotoworld.com, what is going on, their price is way low.

D1X for 3000 dollars?

Who cares? I talked to AE today. All they need is the original invoice where you bought it from and a print out of the best price of the same product fax into them.

And AmEx doesn't care where that best price come from (could be from a bait and switch type of operation) and if it was for a gray market product? In other words, wouldn't they want to make sure that "best price" is legit? Wouldn't AmEx make a phone call to check it out before price matching?

I can't believe some of the prices they have over there at amphotoworld.com. Are they legitimate? I would have paid an extra $2,000 to get the D1x if I could have! (Though I LOVE the CP5000, just not as much as I would the D1x)

I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like you got a good deal on the CP 995. Most of the "cheap deals" use the AMEX blue price match (up to $250).

FYI, I did this for the purchase of my CP 5000. I bought it for $939 and priced matched with Royalcamera.com ($774 a few weeks ago). If prices continue to drop, I can apply additional price matches as low as $689 (939-250) within 60 days from purchase. It takes 2-3 weeks to get the check for AMEX. I'm not sure they will match A&M photo, although I've read posts who claim they did.

If you can return it, and want to spend $150 more on a CP 5000, you may want to consider the AMEX blue deal, although I think its pretty hard to get hold of a CP5k right now.

I did the same thing as you before I made my purchase (ie, researching for hours trying to figure out what the "best value" was, Sony v. Olympus v. Nikon v. Canon etc). In the end, I probably would have been happy with whatever camera I purchased. The point is to learn how to use it properly to take great pictures (which I'm sure you'll do with whatever camera you get CP 995 or CP 5000). The "subjective" factors of the CP5000 lured me into purchase it (styling, compact size, wide angle, conversion lenses, macro, 5 MP, Nikon reputation for true colors) over the others.

best of luck...and don't worry about your purchase. In the next few years, you'll have the opportunity to make all new decisions.

Thanks jtv. oh, don't tell me I will have something to look forward to again...banging heads and sleepless nights in two years...yuck! Ha Ha. I am looking forward to all the neat things I will be able to do...and even post reviews as a camera owner instead of a wannabee. Now, I just have to figure out how I am going to let my wife know I just bought a memory card for $110...

I'm with you. Now that we've made our purchases, it's time to STOP price shopping!

I did not tell him to buy it from them. I told him to buy it at a

local store and use their (amphotoworld.com or other) advertisement > price for a price match with American Express.
Not a bad advice at all. Since if you already have an AmEx card which has the AmEx Blue feature (some AmEx cards already have that Blue Card feature), it wouldn't hurt to use the AmEx card to do the purchase at a local store. Then file a claim for upto $250 per purchase to match the lowest printed price within 60 days (total not to exceed $1,000 per year) - good in U.S. only. I think AmEx just uses that to please their customers and encourage them to use their cards more often. It is great if it goes through, and won't hurt if it doesn't (then you can probably try it again with another ad) since you were going to buy it anyway.

You will love your 995!

By the way, if you live near a Costco, they have a pretty good deal on Compact Flash 128mb memory modules ... $59. for the SanDisk brand, which seems to work fine in my 995. I try to slip one in every month or so on a Costco run and have built up a pile of them. My theory is that having many cards will spread the risk of failure. Each card holds around 80 shots at the fine setting.--Loren Minnick
