several webshops in Denmark are now out of stock of the D50. They have no more, and can not get any more from Nikon ... sad sad ... I hoped I could wait a month more to buy, but you have to be a little faster than that ... Perhaps some larger shops have them, although at a higher price

Yeah, I'm in Denmark too and I asked the shops if they would get more. They said no. I'm going to sit tight and wait for what comes after the D50 (D60 etc) The 1000 dollar price tag for the D80 is just too much for a body that has computer technology. It basically is a computer and I won't use that money on computer technology. The D40 won't work with my lenses (Or more properly put, my eyes and lack of trust of the green dot won't allow manual focus.)

The D50 is gone, but I have hopes for what's next.

Try a D70s if you can still find one. Despite all the demagoguery, it's really not that far behind the D50 in noise. Plus the body feels way better to operate (IMHO).

When the French magazine Chasseur d'Images leaked the D40 information before the official announcement they mentioned the D40 was shown to a small group of Nikon distributors back in Photokina behind door. It was supposedly to give the distributor enough time to deplete their D50 inventory before the official announcement.

If this story is true, D50 product was stopped back in September already.

I shoot a lot of jpeg at iso 1600. The D70 is a little weak there, unfortunately. I considered it, though.

Also, there had been rumours for a while that Nikon was going to introduce another consumer-level camera this year. And in the D40 it's here.

Now the grapevine is quiet. I'd be very surprised if there was a 'D60' within the next six months.

I'm still not convinced there would be a big enough market for it. What spec would it offer to improve on the D40 without cutting into D80 sales? 10mp sensor with D40 viewfinder? Plus AF motor, of course. It's possible but would it be that much cheaper to build than a D80? Any such camera would then end up head-to-head against the 400D, which would further limit its sales.

The D60 will come one day, but I think you might be waiting for the D40's replacement.

I know that getting cameras fixed in the US when bought abroad is a bear. I'm not sure if the reverse is true. I'm a little hesitant. I might buy used when the time comes to replace my D50 as I wait for the D60. That could get me a D70 or another D50 but since I have the luxury of time, I can just wait it out. If I get rich (and who knows, there could be a chance of that) I could just go out and buy a D80.

Agree with that.

I will imagine that in a couple of months time the D40 will be at D50 prices or lower, e.g., £300 including lens. The D80 will come down even further probably around £400 - £450.

That will be competitive with Canon, Pentax and Sony so that Nikon will not need to introduce another model and can concentrate on updating there lenses e.g, primes with AFS / Vr in long primes.

I would reconsider the D80 if I were you. It is a fantastic instrument. 10.2MP, same autofocus engine as the D200, bright wide viewfinder, and tons of advanced features. I never use the in-camera processing (I do everything in NX using RAW) but still I consider the D80 at $1K to be an excellent value.

Here in UK the D70s is scarce now and only available in a couple of only line stores and D50 is showing out of stock as well. So it looks like D50 may be going out the door as the D70s is, being replaced by D40 & D80.
