but every year desktop computers become significantly faster and beefier than the year before, and the software you are using gets more bloated than the year before, and the cost of buying a new desktop is about the same as updating your software and hard drive.
Last year I got one gigabyte of memory in two 512K cards which, along with a fairly fast processor, was quick enough to stay up. Now I need two gig of memory because Lighroom and CS2 slow down with only one gig, and dual core processors are fairly common and not too expensive, so one of those should give me a significant speed boost.
I bought a 160 gig hard drive because my 80 gig hard drive was filling up, and now because of RAW and the R1, my 160 gig hard drive is full, so I think I need at least double that capacity to get me through this next year.
So if I match the memory, the processor and the hard drives the whole solution will be a lot faster than if I try to patch up my current system.
The cost of upgrading my computer every 18 months or so, is about the same as adding these components individually, because you can usually get a good deal on a new system. Plus, you get deals on software and your whole system is set up fresh with virus protection, so you are good for a while.
Anyway, that's how I cope.
