G2 Flip Out LCD

I just got the G2 yesterday.. I am still tyring to figure it all
out.. Ive seen so many great pics.. But I love the swivel LCD so
much.. I too am short and I just like looking on the LCD instead
of in the viewfinder.. I cant wait till I fully undserstand and no
how to use this thing.. Rose
Rose:

Where did you end up buying your G2? What kind of a deal did you get? Did you send in for the AMEX price matching? What ad & what price did you match with?

I'm close!!!

I bought from a guy named Phil at Harmony Computers.. Ordered it last Sunday and got it Friday.. I paid 759 no tax or shipping cost.. I already had the January Popular Photography Magazine and will fax my stuff in on Monday from work.. I will use the 549 price match that most everyone is using.. And I was in Circuit City today buying a case and saw the G2 for 899 still.. So I think I got a heck of a deal... I just need to learn how to use it better.. Rose

i've used the G2... i have it... i just prefer the simplicity of the S100 and S30...
i personally don't like the flip out screen on the G2... to me it
adds bulk and when i have the thing flushed up against the G2the
LCD is upside down, so the viewing angle changes... viewing
angles for TFT displays are different from right side up, upside
down or left or right side up... i like my digicams simple
looking... and the flip out screen makes my G2 looks like a
flicked camcorder...

Ron,
G2 is my first digicam. I too, took your approach of waiting until
the dust settle and the new technology (and prices), stabilize.

Like many others, I did a lot of research before picking the G2. I
had the Sony 85 in mind first. But, once I saw the picture
comparsions on this site and the swivel LCD (what a neat idea!), I
right away put my online order!
Interesting - it sure looks like the G2 and the Sony DSC S85 share the same lens (Canon?) and CCD (Sony?), and they sure look like twins, apart from the buttons, the hot-shoe, the flip out TFT display, and the famous Sony memory stick (anyone remember Beta?). And both G2/S85 are highly recommended by Phil. Other digicams seem to share the G2 lens too - Phil points this out in the G2 review and says, if IRC, Canon assured him it was theirs.

I don't recall the picture comparisons you refer to but can the difference be that great? Another recent thread (sorry forgot which one) posted some Sony F707 pics - they were very impressive. It's a different lens from the S85/G2 of course, coyly labelled "Carl Zeiss" as all(?) Sony's are, but makes you wonder who really designed it and if it will show up in the Canon Pro-IS line, along with the Sony CCD. Sorry for wandering --

cheers, GKL

gkl,
Phil shot the same pictures (same objects), in most of his comparisions.

I don't recall him comparing the S85 to the G2, side by side. But, I had two browsers open, one with G2 shots and one with S85 shots (or other cameras).

That's how I cmpared the G2 to others..

I haven't done the side-by-side comparison. But it's a bit surprising to hear that two cameras which reportedly share the same lens and CCD produce pictures that substantially different. The difference must be due to image processing algorithms? Or are you seeing quality control problems with the "other" brand? Hmmm. Would Canon keep the best lenses for their own cameras? GKL

The G2 has so much battery that I started using the LCD, now
I use it exclusively. It is very robust. I find the ability to
swing, tilt or flip over allows me to find a comfortable position
for every shot, and also makes it easier to get different angles,
instead of taking every shot at eye level. It's a definite plus.
It's one of the reasons I bought a G2.
As to the size issue, I find the G2 a bit larger and heftier to
carry around, but infinitly easier to use than the pocket size
cameras. It really feels like an old rangefinder, size and weight
are similar to a Leica. I use a Canon soft case with shoulder
strap, and keep the camera on a wrist strap. I find that the most
comfortable option.
The size isn't much of an issue. It feels more like a real camera instead of the "rather fragile" all-plastic-bodied compacts.--Printer Boy http://www.printerboyweb.net/ (warning: offensive material inside)

The flip out LCD is incredibly useful. It "flips" out for a reason. When not in use, it's best to close the LCD to protect it. I accidentally scratched mine over the weekend. Of course it doesn't affect the image quality and is barely noticeable when viewing pics with it.

Here's what I was doing when it ended up being scratched:
