About a year ago I downloaded and happily used a sReala custom curve from the Digital Knowledge Database, but the file there now appears to be corrupt, anyone know where I can get hold of these curves? Thanks.

Excellent, thanks Motor. Do you have to use Capture or Toneup to load the curves, no other way? I dug out the free trial disc that came with the camera and the trial has expired.

I beleive so. ToneUp S3 is a very inexpensive alternative, but I don't think it supports the D80 yet (author is dependent on the Nikon Software Developer Kit, which may not be updated yet). Check out the web site:

For $15, you can hardly go wrong. Certainly better than paying for NC.

If you shoot RAW (NEF), you can apply the curve later, out of the camera. That's the only other alternative I know about.

HTH, and good luck!

I managed to load my old sReala curve into my D80 using the trial version of Nikon Camera Control that came with my D80 and I'm really glad I did. I use it almost always.

One nice thing about using Nikon Capture NX is that you can toggle through the various tone curves in your camera, including the one you've put there, and compare the results. Invariably I tend to prefer the sReala curve as a starting point. The dark areas are lightened, showing more data, without blowing highlights.

However, it lowers contrast. Looking at the effect of other tone compensation settings, such as normal, medium high, and low, gives a notion of what more contrast looks like. You can raise contrast yourself, keeping on eye on blown highlights, til you reach a point you prefer.

It's worth the effort

That's good news for D80 owners, Todd. Thanks!

(Nope, haven't upgraded to the D80, and don't plan on it, either)

Hi Guys

Just purchased Todd's ToneUp software - great stuff and fun to work with (I have the Nikon D70s).

Makes it all the more interesting inasmuch that you can easily create your own curves and see the effects on screen using existing images.
Well Done, Todd.
