Why? I have several cards that I use with my G5. To get a G7 would
mean having to needlessly go out and spend more money. Same with
the batteries, I have two spare BP511A batteries, also not backward
compatible.

Just a couple of the problems with this camera they called a G-Series.

And you would also have to put up with the much higher resolution, faster performance, better build, etc. But it's really a matter of perspective, and I guess I'm just a "glass half full" type. I'll gladly buy a more efficient battery and new SD card if it means faster performance and slimmer camera body. Sure it isn't perfect, but there's no better alternative on the market. So instead of complaining about what the new camera isn't, I'll go out and take the best photos I've ever taken with a compact camera (including the bulkier G5). See, my glass really is half full!

One of my relative bought Canon G7 and then I realized it needs
a different format of memory card, it no longer accept Compact Flash
memory which is compatible with any DSLR.
I think my friend was right that he switched to Nikon just because
Canon
keep selling the things that would require to buy separately
instead of being compatible....

The last Digicam I owned was a G5. Today I own two DSLR's and 7GB worth of CF cards. Memory today is so cheap...I remember buying a 1GB CF card at Christmas not too many years ago that cost $300 and the last card I bought, a 4 GB card, cost me $140, but even so, with so many CF cards already in my bag, I also find it a little disgusting you can't find digicams any more that use CF memory. My girlfriend has even resisted upgrading from her Digital Elph S410 for the same reason. In the end we'll have no choice though, as nothing we say or do is gonna change what's happening. At least my 40GB image stank has an SD slot.

YIKES, make that "image TANK"....We need to be able to correct our spelling around here.

Every 24 or 36 shots I had to buy a new box of film for my camera. And I had to figure out whether I wanted slides or prints, Agfa, Fuji or Kodak, yada yada yada...

Just buy one card per camera, still cheaper than film BTW.

Hi ChrisDM,
Nikon's current top compacts use SD cards also, so I really don't
see his point. Also, many new DLSRs, including top 1 series models
from Canon, use SD cards
That should be: ONLY the newer top models DSLR ( 1DsMk2, 1DMk2, 1DMk2N) use CFCards...AND SDcards..., there IS a difference ;-))
So as you see, you and your friend were
way off base with this one.
well, not entirely...

What made the G 1 to 6 and Pro1 extra appealing to DSLR-users using the D30/D60/10D/20D/30D/300D was the commonality in media (CFcard) , battery (BP511[a]) and hotshoe (EX-flash capable)...

... my €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards,

But he was saying that his friend were moving to Nikon cameras because the G7 uses SD cards. And I pointed out that the new Nikons use SD cards now as well, and many DSLRs on the market, not just from Canon. So, as I said, they are off base deciding to move to Nikon because the G7 uses SD cards. Perhaps I should try to sell them some 8 track tapes I have laying around...

Okay, I agree with you.
Canon lost me when they came out with the G7.

No BP-511 battery, no CF card, no RAW. It's a joke!!!! Fine. Canon has the right to do any thing they want to do with their little point & shoot cameras and, thank goodness I have a right to buy another brand.
And, I did.

If I'm going to have to switch batteries, media cards and give up RAW, I might as well try another brand.

Oh, and by the way, no hard feelings. My new little camera is a great point & shoot and cost half the price of Canon's new offering.

But, all you Canon noobies should be very happy with your new G series camera that is nothing more than a glorified A series with a big price tag.
Take your little snapshots and have a great time!

But, but, but, .... oh, never mind!!

I don't blame you. Guess I did get a little carried away.

So what is it? At half the price of the G7, there are lots of Canon options, too.

What means "noobie" here? Confused!

Phil

"noobie"=someone new to photography or new to the Canon line.

My new camera? Doesn't really make any difference. It takes good snapshots and in the right hands will take very good snapshots. Same as the G7.

I can't imagine that term applying to anyone considering a G7. For one thing, you need to go to a serious photography shop just to lay eyes on one. Not carried at Best Buy and the like. And the price would deter most newbies.

Ah, come clean, Ed: It's a Canon, isn't it??? :-)

Phil

A very basic little camera that has a reputation for having a noisy sensor. But I've never seen a picture from any other point & shoot that couldn't be duplicated with it. (Panasonic)
By the way, I'm a big Canon fan.

I'm just one of those people who is very disappointed in their current line of compact cameras.

Sony will always use a their own Memory Stick format.

Phil

Nope, not a Canon.

And the price of the G7 would not matter to many people. Many have purchased very expensive DSLRs and known nothing about photography.

Also, please don't get me wrong. There is NOTHING wrong with being a noobie.

I'm just saying that anyone who was faithful to the Canon line and had used Canon cameras for many years probably feels very disappointed with the G7.

Your disdain is amusing! There is no other Camera in Canon's lineup (or anyone's offerings for that matter) with 10 megapixels, 35-210 f2.8 lens, hotshoe, superior build quality, image stabilization, etc. In fact, the only pocket camera on the market that comes close to competing with the G7 in terms of features and performance is the Panasonic LX2. Some of us are willing to pay for the best, while others are willing to settle I guess. Being a professional photographer, I settle for the best.
