Just got myself a new D80 with the 18-135mm kit lens, plus a 50mm 1.8 prime lens.

This is my first dSLR, and I went back and forth with the Canon/Nikon thing. Ultimately, I think I made the correct decision (and my guess is that most in this forum would agree), and I am very happy with the first pictures I have taken with the camera. So far, so good.

No questions, problems, or anything like that; just wanted to boast a little.

I never gave a damn about the meter man until I was the man who had to read the meters.

post your pics!

what mode are you shooting in?

I'm also a proud owner of new D80. I bought it with 18-135mm lens kit at CC last week and got a good discount... So far, I've taken close to 200 photographs and only couple came out of focus... and probably it was because of me more than the camera... the image quality is simply awesome... I was using a KM 5D before getting D80 and this beats the KM in every which way... I had heard both good and bad things about the 18-135mm lens but all things considered, it has been pretty impressive so far. Eventhough KM was a good camera (I was using the awesome KM 28-75 2.8f D Lens), the main complaint I had with that is the flash... half of the pics had lazy eyes, especially my wife's pictures... So, in a way, buying D80 satisfied my needs of moving on to a better DSLR as well my wife's wishes of not looking lazy in a photograph.

I'll post some photographs later and will be looking forward to hear from fellow Nikonians.

I would be very interested to see some of your shots. I too come from Minolta (5D, 7D + 28-75D, 18-200, 100-300APO, 28-135). I bought instead a D80 + 18-200VR. I like the machine and lens. However it seems to me that the colours are not very good or perhaps that they are not what I used to get from Minolta, which I liked a lot.

I used to shoot RAW and pp with RawShooter Premium, which I can no longer do as RSP does not recognize NEFs produced by a D80. I have tried a number of pp programs, including Adobe Lightroom Beta (which I like best), but they do not compare with RSP. I know Adobe Lightroom includes code from RSP now, but being a beta version, it is very slow and freezes now and then.
However my main problem remains colours!
Any idea from ex-Minolta owners?

I find the colours and quality of Raw shooter essentials (I think Raw Shooter pro, is simular as well) it is definetly not as good as using Nikon Capture or Lightroom ) But I loved the layout of RSE and how quick and responcive it was... great build but not so great processing.

I feel your pain. I have the KM 5D also, and it has been the worst at getting lazy eyes due to its slow preflash delay. I found using a faster camera (preflash delay under 100ms) to help a lot in reducing lazy eyes.

Glad to hear it solved your lazy eyes. Interestingly, some lazy eyes have been reported with the D80 as well:

I got mine a couple weeks ago. It has been eating all my free time since [:-)

I like it a lot. Here is a shot I took of my niece yesterday.

Enjoy.
