Intriguing name, isn't it?
OK, "ostrów" == "an island on the river", "tum" == "church, cathedral", "ostrów tumski" == "an island on the river where the cathedral is located".
This is an oldest part of Wrocław - the town I live in. By oldest I mean that most probably this is the place where first settlement appeared (quite safe and easy to defend). It is not an island any more as some "branches" of the river disappeared, but it is still very peaceful, "magical" place. Very good for a Sunday walk.
A view on the Archicathedral towers (Cathedral of St. John The Baptist). The yellow building on the right (obscuring the cathedral) is, I think, bishop's residence:
A view on the Church of The Saint Cross.
A view on the Saint Mary Church on Sand ("Sand" is the name of another small island, spearate from Ostrów Tumski). The building on the left was a monastery but now it serves as an university library:
And the last (more panoramic) view on Ostrów Tumski with Cathedral and St. Cross Church:
I hope that you enjoyed this short walk. Thanks for watching.
