What did I say to give you that impression? From all accounts, the 17-85IS is a good general purpose lens. As for the kit lens, I thought it was supposed to be at least "decent" when stopped down. But I have neither lens so I cannot say from experience.

When I bought my 20D I purchased the 17-85 lens. Then I learned about aperture. I sold the lens on ebay and purchased several 2.8 lenses. The 17-85 is pretty good, but build quality and moving aperture bugged me. If you have the money and want quality, go with a better lens.
