D80 settings for better pictures without post-processing

I am a newbie and got my first DSLR (D80). I am still
learning how to post-process using PS. While I am figuring
out how to post-process, I want to adjust camera settings so
that I get the best possible pictures out of the camera.
Can someone please suggest me what should I set for
Saturation, Sharpness, Color and any other settings that
gives me best out of the camera pictures.

Also it would be a great help if someone point me to some
good site/articles on how to post process using PS. I read some
articles that showed up on google and I learned a bit on how
to adjust levels using PS, but I am still not quite happy with the
outcome and I yet to figure out how to adjust color saturation
and sharpness properly using PS.

I have thousnads of PS help links in my Photoshop Online Resource Guide. I add and update this list approximately every two weeks. Already have a couple of dozen new add ons I will put up in a week or so.

Make no mistake about it. Full photoshop has quite a steep learning curve (at least for this feeble minded user). Perhaps that is why I keep this resource guide :-)

I keep hearing good things about Kelby's book...I too might try and find it.

By the way, if I come half as close to your (JRDavis) photographs I'll be quite pleased.

I just had a look at amazon, and there are lot of books on Photoshop
by Scott Kelby. Can you please suggest me which is a good start for
a beginner like me.

Sharpening = Low or nil
Color space = aRGB
Tone = Low or AUTO

If you are shooting JPG and want files direct out of camera w/o any more work, perhaps up the sharpening to Normal.

Good RAW converter for D80 = Capture One by Phase (LE version will do)

It's digital and it will cost you nothing to experiment with different settings. If necessary take a notepad and write down the settings you used for various captures. After a while you will figure out what looks good to your eyes...
