is waiting for the battery to charge.

Sorry, had to do it.

A watched pot doesn't boil and..............

So it is a good time to read the manual.

Be well,

customers enough to ship with a fully charged battery.

No pro is going to buy a camera where he has to wait for the battery to charge before using it.

After all this might cost him a job.

You think ?

I think if you are going to lose your job because of a battery charging out of the box, there is a problem - the charge is much shorter than the shipping time - who knows when that will get to your door (unless of course you paid for the overnight shipping) -

Shipping fully charged batteries is not really that practical considering how long it takes things to go from the factory to the customer.

Well, my K10D is on a UPS truck, and I have to wait another 3 hours until I can go pick it up at the depot because I wasn't here when they tried to deliver. Then I have to wait for the battery to charge!! The sun is down already anyway, so it's not as though there's much for me to shoot tonight.

i'm not sure if any electronic product is really shipped with a fully charged battery. even mp3 payers and laptops are shipped with batteries that have very little charge or no charge at all. i think it's more of a safety issue than anything. remember all those laptop batteries exploding? well the batteries for these dslr's use the same lithium ion technology. so shipping a container full of charged batteries may be a bit unsafe ;)

the other thing is that even if the batteries where full charged from the manufacturer, the batteries do drain. how long does a product sit on a shelf before it is bought (k10d excluded)? by the time someone gets to it, the battery might have already been drained.

Doesn't the K10 have, well, a built-in flash? Bring your own light...

I was under the impression that many batteries are shipped fully charged, but sit on shelves so long that customers are advised to charge before us.

Unlike NiMH, LiIon batterries do not self-discharge. The clock circuits inside the camera will use miniscule charge, but this doesn't apply to cameras shipped with the battery separate.

There are two reasons that no items are shipped with fully charged LiIon batteries -

1. Safety - a partially charged batteries have much less changed of becoming a blowtorch if the (Sony) cell is faulty or if the battery were damaged in transit.

2. Battery life - a LiIon battery will degrade much faster if it is stored with more than 40% charge.

Fully charged, all settings done, time to go shoot.

See ya later,
You probably should bring along a photo of your wife & kids, so you can recognize them the next time you see them... might be a while. =)

And be careful out there. I don't want to here about a photo crazed lunatic causing a ten car pile up on the 710 South just so he could have something "dynamic" to shoot. Car accidents are not the preferred method of testing the Shake Reduction! Two hands on the wheel, with the K10D safely in the passenger seat (restrained with the seat belt of course).

I think (hope) he was joking. Yes, shipping/storing Li-Ion cells fully charged is a no-no, and will kill them faster than anything. As far as Pentax's pro attitude, I fully expect my K10d to come with a gnome, who will vigorously turn an included dynamo to cut the initial charging time. If he does a good job, I'll let him retire to my garden.

That is the reason they are my favorite models, so I don't forget what they look like.

The K10D will be in the box, on the floor, out of reach with my lens packed in a separate bag. Besides, that is why I got the C-n-n 700IS, light weight, shake reduction, big LCD screen, and who needs both hands on the wheel. One hand on phone, the other on camera. Steer with knees. This is L.A. so do as the natives do. (Although I am not into putting on my make-up at 70 with the mirror aimed at my face instead of the traffic behind me.)

I believe - batteries were fully charged when factory shipped away that beautiful Pentax camera. I guess somebody on postal office just steals electricity!?

V.

Actually the postal workers (inc. UPS and such) have a soft spot for Pentax gear and can't resist open every package and snap some 2000 images with each camera that pass through their hands. Which might also explain the time it takes for cameras to reach the customers.

...as my Minolta.

I know this has been posted but damn... that battery and charger are EXACTLY the same as my 7D battery/charger.

My K10D will start its life connected to shore power while the battery charges. I have the power cable for it.

Maybe Wednesday. Maybe tomorrow.

Joe

Argh. UPS are morons. I drove 45 minutes to meet them at the appointed time, waited for an hour and half, and they finally told me the truck wouldn't be there for at least another hour. So I gotta swing by and get it tomorrow after work, which means I can't shoot until Wednesday. Oh well, just gotta use the DS. ;-)
