yup, a naive question: the g6 review here is pretty solid but when i do a search at popular places like amazon, i find that it's hard to find a new, reasonably priced g6 for sale. (for example, some brainiac is selling a new g6 for $850!)

is the g6 no longer being produced by canon?

seems like the g6 may be the better deal over the g7 if you're focusing on just image quality so i'm a bit puzzled. of course, i understand that marketing and sales can determine what is produced/supported and what's not but i'd like to hear what's going on from knowledgeable people like you!

if you know of a reputable place that is selling the g6 for a reasonable price, i'm interested in that, too!

thanks ;-)

I know the feeling only too well. Sold my G2 about a year ago and regretted it ever since. Been looking for a G6 (don't fancy the G7 much) for ages but no joy. No use putting 'G6' into Ebay - all you get are accessories for G-series cameras.

I'm in the UK, so have no real options to find discontinuted cameras, but a friend in the US suggested KEH ( http://www.keh.com ). I've had a look, no G6s, but a good few G5s and G3s to choose from. If you have any luck, let me know - I'd be very interested to hear how you got on.

Good luck!

try ebay - that's where I got mine...but be careful...check the sellers feedback and ask lots of questions before you seriously bid.

i realize that everything's a gamble but ebay adds an extra layer of risk! i know: check their feedback ratings and the number of items sold. yes, i'm sure that helps but i definitely don't feel very confident bidding on something that i can't inspect first.

having said that, i will take a look. thanks :-)

I think they are hard to find because those who have one don't want to part with it. That's my guess.

if true, that's saying a lot about the camera. i know that it's super easy to buy a G7 but i need to reread the review here on it....

i think i need to do a search for a G6 vs G7 thread.... !

It's easy to find a G7 because it's in production. Ised to buy my SLR's used. I sometimes payed as much as new if the camera was well liked.

G6 is hard to find is because it has been discountinued for almost a year new. Most store have run out their stock. However, my local ritz camera still has a one or two new ones. Check your local ritz.
i just did a search at b&h and it's not even listed! it must be
as extinct as the dodo bird!

Canon orders parts to put just so many G6 units together and after that, the G6 is history.

If only that method worked here in the UK! I'll just have to get an A630 or something as a carry-around camera. This whole business just highlights the loss of the 'prosumer' compact. By dropping these cameras, they've thrown the baby out with the bathwater. DSLRs are just great, but you don't want to lug them about. It's such a big step down from DSLR to compact now - no 'bridge' or 'prosumer' models in between.

Grrr, just wanted to get it off my chest!

hi john,

i've got good news: i just bought a one year old canon g6 for $430 :-) honestly, i'm not too comfortable buying things on ebay but since i couldn't find the g6 anywyhere else, i decided to check the u.s. ebay site and there are actually a number of g6's for sale. why don't you take a look. some sellers won't ship overseas but some will.

one reason i made a bid for this particular g6 is because it's only a year old and the warranty is good till 07/20/2008 so it helped ease my concerns.

also, the pictures of the g6 looked pretty good with no apparent scratches or marks.

but i'm not jumping for joy just yet. as soon as i get the g6, i'll examine it carefully and then decide whether i got really lucky or not.

i've got a business trip coming up in late january and i hope to take the g6 (along with my sd550) to take pictures of the events at a two-week training thing; the pictures will later be used in the gallery section of a cd-rom that i'll be working on for the attendees. naturally, pictures on a cd-rom don't have to be big but what i'm hoping is that the g6 will do an excellent job of taking good, clear, sharp pictures indoors and without using the flash (it would certainly disrupt the training going on).

anyway, john, why don't you take a look at the u.s. ebay and see if you can find a seller who's selling a g6 and is also willing to ship to the u.k. without charging an arm and a leg. as you know, you can send sellers an email and i would strongly advise getting an exact cost for shipping to you.

best wishes and do keep us posted in this thread!

Hi.

I'm really pleased you found a G6, and something reasonably new. I hope it is in good condition.

I'll certainly check out the US ebay site. What with the dollar/pound exchange rate being so favourable (almost $2 to the £) I might get a bargain!

I'll let you know how I get on.

great. i wish you success in your search!

Might be just me and my own set of needs, but i passed on a used g6 at KEH and went for a new G7. What made the difference? I got to touch and feel the G7.

I used to have a G5, and liked it a lot, despite the noisy sensor. The G6 is an upgrade, but is bulkier and less "pocket friendly". The G7 has as good a lens, IS, is compact and very solid, a longer focal length, and lower noise. Plus, it's black and unobtrusive, while the G6 sticks out and looks like a Star Wars storm trooper.

I don't use RAW, so that's a non-issue for me.

I think part of the reason why G6's are so scarce is that they didn't sell all that well in the face of lower cost DSLR's being available. Those weren't around when the G5 was new, which is why I bought mine. My G5 was a DSLR substitute until they came out with one I wanted and could afford

The G7, because of its small size and light weight is not a DSLR substitute, it's a companion or alternative--which the G6 and Pro 1 were not. (at least not for me)

hi jerry and thanks for your reply. i hope not, but i may regret getting a g6 instead of the easily available g7. only time will tell and my g6 is still on its way to me. after i get it, i'll play with it and have a better basis for saying whether i like it a lot or not. i hope i do!

i've got the sd550 and love it. very compact and takes good pictures. i had the sd700 but i wasn't impressed at all. i thought that since i already have a decent ultracompact, that i'd give the g6 a go since it had good reviews and i hope it'll take very good pictures. i'll be quite disappointed if the g6 doesn't take much better pictures than my 550.

i held a g7 in my hand at the local ritz shop and while portability, color, etc are important, i'm more concerned about picture quality and so i opted for the bigger g6.

if the g6 takes great pictures, i'll be a happy man and take it with me on my next business trip to mongolia. if not, i may try to sell it and look for another camera...
