Can you tell me which one you would buy and why? Thanks for all the help. I did the comparison thing but the real test is probably from those that have used the cameras and I have not used either.

I'd probably buy the Canon S3 IS for its articulated LCD or the Fuji S6500 for its low light ability and 28 mm wide end.

(I own a FZ5. It needs manual focus which I believe the FZ7 has.)

The FZ7 has slightly more noise at high iso.
The H5 has colour aberrations (red-green shift)
in the corners, just like the Canon. Pick your poison!

I like that the FZ7 is jacket pocketable and uses
standard SD cards, the H5 uses proprietary Sony MS.

Using the F Z 5

Nothing like confusing me more. I have looked at the Canon but I don't like the small LCD screen.
Not sure about the FUJI. Will have to take a look.

On the other hand, the Sony uses AA batteries.

Well, Fuji is out for me as I want optical image stabilization.

On the other hand, the Sony uses AA batteries.
That has some bad effects on flash recharge time.
My choice would be the Sony H5 for these reasons:
1. Great IQ with very reasonably priced high quality TC and WA adapters.

2. Fastest Prefocus Shutter Lag- only 11 milliseconds (the most important lag if you prefocus).
3. Excellent high resolution (230K pixels) 3" LCD.

4. Most powerful internal flash (up to 30'). That's one reason the flash recycle time is slightly longer. the other is it uses only 2 AAs.
5. Accurate autofocus control (small center focus box), and
5. Articulated (peaking) manual focus screen indicator.

Panasonic FZ7 will have better images in good light

FZ7 is pocketable
IMO, all these superzooms are pocketable with some discomfort. Like the old Mae West line in the movie ???: "Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just happy to see me".

But all are more suited for a small waist pouch which is preferable to a stuffed pocket.
S3 allows you to zoom while taking movie...don't think H5 does
The H5 does allow zooming while taking movies. No zoom noise detected in my tests.

People are getting very good results with 3rd party ones for
bargain prices, see Panasonic Talk Forum for more info.
2. Fastest Prefocus Shutter Lag- only 11 milliseconds (the most
important lag if you prefocus).
Difference to the FZ7 is only 6 milliseconds, not noticeable
in practise. And I think I've read somewhere that using OIS mode 1
shortens this even more. Compare this to entry level DSLRs with
their around 100 ms shutter lag and no one complains about them
being slow. So this is a total non-issue.

This one, you will have to go the store and try it.

Have the S3, access to F7, played with the H5 at the store and the speed only has what won me with the S3. The other to is so s.l.o.w. in focus and zoom.

Go try they out.

I should have also mentioned:

The FZ4 (&presumably FZ7) is very slow to start up as it has to deploy that lens.

The Tizzy lens is pre-deployed and doesn't even extend until you zoom more than about 3x - a fact that I didn't know until I got it. Very fast start-up.

The FZ7 is defaulted to the slowest focus mode (stupid Panny!)
if set to the hi-speed modes it is "near DSLR" speed, very snappy.

I second your suggestion to try them out if possible, see how they
handle and whether they fit in a jacket pocket (if that matters to
the buyer).

I have an FZ4 & a Tizzy. The FZ4 (essentially the same as FZ7) is
NOT pocketable.
Depends on the pocket. :-) I've always got my FZ5 in my jacket
pocket when I go out, it is light so it's no problem at all. I even
have the adapter ring on that adds size. Sometimes even a tcon
mounted, still in pocket.

It's the same size as the FZ4. The FZ7 is just slightly bigger.

The kind of information I was looking for. Thanks
