Totaly confused by SB600!

Marco,
Yes, it's easy to forget those "idiot" modes (using the term
affectionately not as an insult), but ut as I look at the modes,
which would have been the best to use for the situation that was
presented (wider DOF for group shots)? Portrait mode might be too
narrow. Or scenery? I'm not sure.
To tell you the truth, my D50 is now close to 20,000 shutter releases, but I've never yet used any of the Vari-Program modes.
With these modes I feel that I'm not controlling my photos anymore.
I use mostly aperture priority mode, precisely for the control of DOF.

My Minolta D7i had built-in scene modes, but the only one I ever
used was Sports mode. I needed the memory feature to create my own
"scene modes."

Do you see where I am coming from?
OK, fair enough, it was just a thought I had, but I can understand your point. The Minolta D7i is not a DSLR though.

I wonder whether this "user memory" feature is on the wish list of any DSLR users?

Marco

I agree that if all I needed to remember or set up was just the aperture, a user memory would be redundant and virtually useless. However, the settings that I vary, depending on the particular situation include, aperture, shutter speed, focus mode, flash mode, contrast, EV, and ISO. That's a lot to keep track of, but more importantly, I would like be ready in just a couple of seconds. I challenge anyone to vary all those parameters in just a few seconds without dropping the camera in the rush.

Are there any serious photographers on this forum us just "set it and forget" where their DSLR is concerned? If so, I suppose that I could just leave the mode dial in AUTO and be done with it. But, if I did that, I wouldn't have bought the D80. I could have gotten a Kodak Easyshare for a heck of a lot less money.

My point in even bringing this up is not that the D80 is any less of a camera because it lacks user memory, but in the hope that Nikon might add such a function to the next firmware release. After all, it's only software and a little memory that I'm talking about. If there isn't enough room to store the user settings in the camera memory, I'd be happy to but the user files on my SD cards for the camera to access.

Dewdrop,

Thanks for not taking offence and then clarifying. I agree it would be cool for the different memories- but as you are almost sure of in the back of your mind, it's not gonna happen. This is my second camera where I hoped for small updates in firmware and haven't seen anything. (Panasonic fz20 and Nikon D50). I've come to expect that they won't ever do firmware updates. It's a shame but that 's where it stands.

I still think that it's worth finding a mode ("auto" or "portrait") for us to give our cameras to wives and friends to snap away.) It still takes me by surprise when I have to give my camera away for a couple of shots. I guess that is what Auto is for. But as I'm seeing, like you, the prefered aperture seems to be F5.6 which brings us back to your first problem of too narrow depth of field.
