You're a little over-exposed in the first two shots, as indicated by the blown highlights. Try playing with EV, WB and full manual as you're out and about. After all, film for the E-500 is pretty cheap!
While shooting photos at any time of the day is acceptable, as tuthdoc mentioned early morning or late afternoon provides the best light.
I know this particular book has been mentioned 37 million times before, I'll mention and suggest it again...
"Understanding Exposure, Revised Edition" by Bryan-Peterson. It's a great read.
