Skin tones -- how to fix?

Very nice. When you adjust skin tones the way you like, what tools do you use?
I have problems with Skin Tones and find it to be a difficult fix.
If you correct the skin, then the background looks like it's been
filtered as well. I use a mask and, once I got the skin the way I
liked, put the corrected version under the orig and then masked in
the new skin. This left the rest of the colors in the photo as
shot.

I bought a 14" black/grey/white collapsible reflector from PhotoVision that is supposed to be neutral. I've tried it once (just got it Friday for a shoot) and it gets me darn close pretty quickly. Need to experiment with it more. I got it because I wasn't clear on the all-around-usefulness of the expodisc and the whibal card is mail order and I needed it asap.

You picture is slightly bluish; white balance seems off.

If you want to control white balance before the image is captured,
you need to read up on white balance and/or use test/reference
shots with something like ExpoDisc or WhiBal products.

If you want to adjust in post-processing.... I got better skin tone
on your JPG by using a point-and-click white balance tool in an
editing program to click on the bark-less patch on the tree, which
I'll presume should be truly neutral gray.

The white balance tool will remove color casts from things in the
image that you decide should be neutral in color
(white/gray/black). Automated white balance tools in-camera or in
post-processing are not perfect and can make mistakes in assuming
what should be neutral.

If white balance adjustment does not help (at all or as much as you
like), check your monitor calibration.

As Pam pointed out, the image is a bit on the cool side. Also, measuring her facial skin tones, yellow is considerably below magenta. According to Dan Margulis, Caucasian skin is always more yellow than magenta except for a new born where they are approximately equal. With this in mind I used LAB mode to increase saturation slightly favoring the yellow channel. This brought the overall skin color closer, except for her face which was still a bit too pale compared to, say her legs that appear to have a healthy tan.

Using a curve adjustment layer I darkened the image until her face looked healthier. The used a black mask to hide all and painted in only her face and neck.
