Hello, any suggestion for macro lens for the D80?

I will photograf subjects like mecanic parts, insects and toys, outside and inside a photo box.

Also, if you can suggest me a website of lights, photo box and setups?? As mine are a little bit older and ugly.

Thanks, Klaus.

Tamron 90/2.8 or Tokina 100/2.8. (Also do a search onthe forum.)

Regarding lights and such other will have to chime in.

have you ever used flash on photo box. I dont, but then again, I'm far from professional and maybe it is used with another configuration and setup?

Hi Klaus

One of the nice things about macro lenses is that all of the ones on sale at the moment seem pretty good. Favourites are probably the Tamron 90mm and the Nikon and Sigma 105mm ones. These give more working distance than the 50-60mm ones and are all very good lenses indeed. I use the Sigma and I'm very pleased with it.

If you're interested in techniques etc. I have a page of useful links (rather oriented towards insect photography) at http://web.mac.com/rknell/iWeb/Bugsite

Cheers

Rob

You have have been very helpful, I'm now getting more info to make a better choice. I will get you guys news when I will have my "dream package". And I hope I wont annoy you guys with new questions !!

The new Sigma EX 70mm/2.8 is available but I havent seen any reviews, no pics (only few at Pbase) and no comments here. Can you shar your thoughts about the lens? Any pics? What do you think abot AF, CA, ECT...

I haven't used the Sigma 70/2.8. I only commented that at f/22 and higher diffraction limits the resolution (diffraction starts affecting IQ already at f/11-f/16 depending on camera/film format). Therefore pretty much all lenses except REALLY bad ones will perform pretty much the same at those apartures.

I doubt that the Sigma 70 is significantly different from the other macro lenses on the market and it probably is very sharp as all other current macro lenses from Sigma/Tamron/Tokina/Nikon.

70mm would be a pretty nice focal length if you don't do that much bugs. It would be a little better choice than the "around 100mm" lenses if you're interested in portraits.

It seems to be approx. the same price as the 90/105mm lenses though, so I see no real advantage in buying it...

Now I saw in the subject line that the question was not aimed at me... Better to reply on the message you are commenting... :-)

I recently had the same deciscion to make. I looked at the Sigma, Nikkor and Tamron. They are all good lenses. The Nikkor is much heavier has a better build quality and is more expensive. I chose the Tamron and like the lightness of the lens and its incredible sharpness. Here are a few samples. More are in my gallery under macro.
