I have thought about that. I have the 1DM2 and not the N version and the smaller screen is no big deal. I just bought a 580 ex flash so if I got the 30D I wonder if I would quailfy for the double rebate (there was a rebate on the flash). $200 off on the 30D would make it pretty close to the price of the 20D.
The wisest thing to do may be to just look for a used 20 or 30D, especially if rumors heat up about a new model. For a backup sports and event camera I really don't think I need an improved version.
Now the 5D is another matter and worth waiting on. I would be using this camera mainly for landscapes and artistic type work. I am aware that dynamic range is already very good on the 5D, but even a slight improvement would be usefull, especially since it will not cost me anything to wait for the upgraded version.
It is funny how our views can change. When I first started thinking of changing from Nikon to Canon I thought all the Canons were lacking something in what I wanted. I thought the 20D did not have enough megapixels and the 5D was not fast enough. The 1Ds was just out of the question as far as price - heck, the D2X seemed like a fine alternative.
But now that I am getting used to the 1DM2 I have done a complete flip flop on my views. The 1DM2 is the perfect sports camera and a darned good wedding camera, and 8 megapixels is more than enough (especially compared to the D2Hs 4.1). I am learning to really appreciate the cleaner high iso files, and there is a difference! The 20/30D is the perfect sports compliment camera and can even be a good first camera for weddings. Again I am seeing 8 megapixels is more than enough. I will get the 5D as my other wedding camera, vacation camera, and artistic camera.
Three bodies that all fit certain applications very well -
1DM2 and 20/30D for sports
5D and 20/30D for weddings
5D for vacations
5D and 20/30D for non-sports times when I need two bodies instead of changing lenses. If I were to take two bodies on a vacation this would be the two I would take.
Along with my 17-40, 24-70, 70-200 (I would take the 70-300 IS instead of the 70-200 for vacations) I think I could cover just about anything I would ever want to cover and not feel I need something more. Obviously I now think the three bodies compliment each other very well.
I do understand how the 1Ds M2 is the perfect camera for some, but I really don't think I am missing anything personally by not having this camera because of what the other models do.
