It's the computers fault! I know what we type gets changed by the computer because so many times when I look at my post I just know I did not type all those misspelled words!

Seriously, I am really debating about waiting for the rumored 40D or get the 30D now. A few months ago I bought the 1DM2 and I absolutely love this camera. I am in the process of selling my Nikon stuff (the D2X was a great camera but I shoot a lot of sports at high iso) and when it is all sold I will get the 5D replacement. The 5D replacement really will not be a practical choice, more of an emotional one as I really want to start pursuing more artisitic type of photography. The practical choice would be the 30D.

I don't like to shoot anything I get paid for without a backup camera, and the Nikon D80 is my backup now. Obviously I need another Canon as a backup. i have been reading all the rumors and it seems like dynamic range may be improved slightly with the new sensor, autofocus may be improved, and it will probably be a 10 megapixel camera. For what I do though, I think the 30D would be more than good enough, even for a second wedding camera. If I had to choose which camera to wait on, I think the 5D should be were I need to show patience.

I will try and hold off to February as this is around the corner.

Yeah, I said screw it and went ahead and got a 30D. If the 40D is that much better, I'll consider selling my 10D to help pay for it and use the 30D as the backup. :) Or, just sell the 30D and take it as a loss. Either way, I doubt it'll be that inspiring to be honest with you.

Now, if it had wireless flash triggering, a GPS addon, 12 mpx and made coffee for me, then I'd run out and get it. Otherwise, are you losing out more from not getting the 30D now then waiting for something that most likely will not happen?

i can deal with a new camera but the lens i want 2.8IS 17-55 only works with 400/20/30 what if it doesn
't work with the 40d!

that if you invest heavily into ef-s or other cropped frame digital lens that you will not be able to use them on the 5D and other FF cameras coming out.

I don't know if the 40D will come out in Feb. It's just rumors. From the previous post of the elusive 40D, the specs weren't impressive. 2mp more and antidust. doesn't seem all that great. 5D is a great camera, but very unforgiving on lens. You'll have use $$ lens to get the quality you want. 30D is more fogiving for lens selection. I did the same thing and decided to wait for the 40D announcement in Sept. I had the money to get the 30D months before but decided to hold off. 40D came and went and didn't see any confirmation which came to a loss of month of taking pictures. Got the 30d and loving every min of it. Now I'm doing researching on best glass to get and that's a whole nother ballgame, but oh so fun!

its the SAME camera

save your self a few hundred dollars, suffer the smaller screen and no spot metering and those Useless scene modes....and get the 20D

everything else is almost identical

I have thought about that. I have the 1DM2 and not the N version and the smaller screen is no big deal. I just bought a 580 ex flash so if I got the 30D I wonder if I would quailfy for the double rebate (there was a rebate on the flash). $200 off on the 30D would make it pretty close to the price of the 20D.

The wisest thing to do may be to just look for a used 20 or 30D, especially if rumors heat up about a new model. For a backup sports and event camera I really don't think I need an improved version.

Now the 5D is another matter and worth waiting on. I would be using this camera mainly for landscapes and artistic type work. I am aware that dynamic range is already very good on the 5D, but even a slight improvement would be usefull, especially since it will not cost me anything to wait for the upgraded version.

It is funny how our views can change. When I first started thinking of changing from Nikon to Canon I thought all the Canons were lacking something in what I wanted. I thought the 20D did not have enough megapixels and the 5D was not fast enough. The 1Ds was just out of the question as far as price - heck, the D2X seemed like a fine alternative.

But now that I am getting used to the 1DM2 I have done a complete flip flop on my views. The 1DM2 is the perfect sports camera and a darned good wedding camera, and 8 megapixels is more than enough (especially compared to the D2Hs 4.1). I am learning to really appreciate the cleaner high iso files, and there is a difference! The 20/30D is the perfect sports compliment camera and can even be a good first camera for weddings. Again I am seeing 8 megapixels is more than enough. I will get the 5D as my other wedding camera, vacation camera, and artistic camera.

Three bodies that all fit certain applications very well -

1DM2 and 20/30D for sports

5D and 20/30D for weddings

5D for vacations

5D and 20/30D for non-sports times when I need two bodies instead of changing lenses. If I were to take two bodies on a vacation this would be the two I would take.

Along with my 17-40, 24-70, 70-200 (I would take the 70-300 IS instead of the 70-200 for vacations) I think I could cover just about anything I would ever want to cover and not feel I need something more. Obviously I now think the three bodies compliment each other very well.

I do understand how the 1Ds M2 is the perfect camera for some, but I really don't think I am missing anything personally by not having this camera because of what the other models do.

I can't predict what or when Canon will come out with in the future. But to me, it seems terribly obvious that if they come out with a camera called the "40D", it WILL be a 1.6X sensor and it WILL be EF-S compatible.

If they come out with a cheaper FF or 1.3X body, then it WON'T be called a 40D. That would just be silly because the XXD line is all 1.6X so they will not break with that nomenclature convention.

And in addition, I do believe that Canon will continue to come out with follow-on bodies to the very successful 10/20/30D line. I think 1.6X and EF-S are here to stay for quite a while.

1.6X and EF-S just have so many advantages. Lower cost, smaller, lighter... Tot up what it would cost to have the equivalent of a 30D with an EF-S 10-22, and an EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS in full-frame. And look at the weight of the equivalent full-frame system too. You'll spend an awful lot more for the full-frame system and it's not just the cost of the body! Really, that's the whole point of a 1.6X system. It's cheaper, smaller, lighter. Those factors will not change in the foreseeable future.

So there will, in my opinion, continue to be a great market for 1.6X DSLRs. Really, every other camera manufacturer is betting on it!

Of course, that does not prevent Canon from coming out with whatever other models they see fit to produce. Full frame is where Canon has an obvious market edge over everyone else. Nobody else currently supplies FF bodies. They will certainly continue to improve the FF lineup and press their advantage in being the only game in town for FF.

And the 1.3 bodies have been successful too. A lot of people are very used to that format and it's got advantages. So it's possible that they'll even come out with new 1.3X bodies too.

But my gut feeling is that we'll certainly continue to see both 1.6 and 1.0 bodies for quite some time. So don't get your knickers in a twist imagining that 1.6X is going to go away and that Canon is going to magically start producing very cheap full-frame bodies and drop 1.6. It's not going to happen - at least not for a very long time if ever.

Anyhow, that's my uninformed opinion for whatever that's worth ;-)

I posted this in another thread a short while ago...

The only model that won't be upgraded next year will be the 400D. That we can be sure of.

That leaves us with 1D (x2?), 5D and 30D upgrades.

I'm sure that the next 5D will use something equivalent to the current 1Ds 16mp sensor. But to avoid stepping on the 1 series toes, the 1Ds will be upgraded first.

The 5D (as rumoured) may well split into two lines - with a cheaper FF ofered as an alternative. But this cheaper version (if it exists) would be released after the higher end version (to avoid people dumping their cash on the cheaper model).

So, we can deduce that the upgrades may well be released in the following order...

1Ds III
High end 5D (5DII?)
1D III
Low end 5D (7D?)
40D

Working backwards, I think the 40D will be released as per the usual 18 month release schedule indicating an autumn 2007 announcement.

The low end 5D sometime in the summer.
The 1D III and high end 5D at PMA
The 1Ds III possibly before/just after christmas 2006.

This line up makes alot of sense - 2 x 1.6crop cameras, 2 x FF cameras, plus 2 x pro cameras.

Don't forget that being an anniversary year, Canon are unlikely to announce everything at once (PMA) and disappear off the map for the rest of the year. They're certainly going to want a year long barrage of new announcements, therefore press coverage. No-one else will get a look in :-)

On the other hand, Canon may decide that the sewing machine market is the next big thing, and stop camera production. Who knows!

Modifications are substantial to make it worth (imho).
In no particular order:

-The LCD is much better with 230,000 pixels and mush wider viewing angle
-slightly larger and better grip
-larger buffer for jpegs and RAW for continuous shooting
-high and low continuous shooting rate
-tweaked and better AF
-spot meter
-up to 10,000 files in a folder
  • RGB histograms
  • ISO in viewfinder when changing - very convenient
-picture styles - some like it a lot, especially when shooting in jpeg

And may a few others that I forgot

FF sensor material was on sale...so Canon bought a few hundred thousand and decided to make the 40D FF

i agree.....1.6x here to stay, and really...NOTHING wrong with that, i LOVE the added tele i get from my lenses...its actually really nice! they are well build, responsive and well designed...i don't need a 5D or 1 series...and i bet you that the majority of the people on this forum use their 20/30d to their full potential any way.

the photos are only as good as the photographer....the camera is your tool

VERY unlikely that you are going to get a "better" shot with a 40D than you would a 40D...
so people...stop bickering and go take photos!!

those trivial things....

you managed to leave out the only worth while thing..spot metering

what i SHOULD have said was...the 20D and 30D will produce the EXACT SAME PHOTO...seeing as though the sensors are idential..with the idential image processor in them

picture styles???? that is just the lazy man's way of getting out of doing it your self...worth producing a "new" camera out of them???

the bigger LCD....yes, its handy...but why does it need to be bigger...just sucks more power from the alreaddy small batteries, and they still do not show you sharpness, exposure accuratly enough for you to care....so??? the advantage is where again???

larger bufer...yeah ok, by a few pictures

updated AF.....and you actually notice this "upgrade"?

i could go on....

my point in all this ramble is that it is basically an updated 20D....not worthy of a whole new model....20D MKII yes....

a new model is worthy when the actual output changes....not minor things that all aside from the bigger screen and the spot metering could have been one firm ware upgrade.

JUST MY OPINION!!

point still stands

a new camera comes out and espeshally in this case not a significant upgrade...and suddenly the older model doesn't worth any more...

For the first time, I will have net income from photography this year, and the dilemma is whether to pay tax on the profit or spend it on an upgraded camera now, knowing that the same money would buy more camera and be useful for a few more years if I wait a few months more. I just talked to my accountant about it. She suggested I flip a coin.

That's me too. Except I'd be selling the 30D to go "40D" as I'm just starting and it's my only dSLR body.

If "40D" comes out in Feb and kicks- then I'll probably upgrade.

If it comes out Feb and is so-so, then I stick with 30D

If it doesn't come out in Feb and not till much later in 2007 then I will rejoice in the many glorious months I've had using and loving the 30D, rather than waiting around for the next latest greatest thing to arrive...

I KNEW I had seen your name in the Nikon forum before...

Well, I'm another happy switcher, I have to smile SO hard when the Nikon folks try to convince themselves there is no noise issue with their cams...

The 1D mkII would be my dream cam, but I'm very happy with the 30D so why spend the bucks.

Happy shooting

Claire

The difference in high iso performance is very real and very noticable. I kept waiting for that D3H and got tired of waiting. The 1DM2 is truly a dream camera for me because of all the sports I shoot. I need a back up though so I am another one of those debating about buying a 30D now or waiting a few months. The more I think about it the more I will most likely buy now and take advantage of the rebates.

I keep reading about a next generation sensor for Canons that will have better dynamic range. Dynamic range is pretty darn good as it is on the 1DM2 and for sports and weddings I think it is good enough, and I can bet the same can be said about the 30D. I hope to start producing artistic type prints worthy of selling in the next few years. So if I am going to wait on a camera it should be the 5D, which is what I will do. The 1DM2/30D combo will give me what I need, a future 5D will give me what I want!

It is kind of strange seeing so many familiar names on the Canon forums from us former Nikon shooters. You would think Nikon would understand what an issue this is for those that do a lot of high iso shooting. Yes, the files can be cleaned up and noise can be reduced by perfect exposure, perfect white balance, ya da ya da ya da! But I am not always perfect and when I am off on white balance or exposure, yikes, the noise can get nasty. It is really nice to not even have to apply any noise reduction on folders that previously needed it. I had the D2X which probably is the noisiest of their cameras. I don't find anything "plasticy" in the images and colors are just fine.

Add me in with my D60 :-) But my needs are more into wideangle, not too wide I shoot a lot with 28 and 35 on rangefinders, and the 5Ds viewfinder is just what I want when I used my Contax RTS or 167MT. The 5D and 35/1.4 and 85/1.2 is very high on my wishlist :-)
